Chapter 10 - The Final Scent

Six months later, the private dining room of Boston’s most exclusive restaurant was closed off entirely for a quiet, private celebration.

There were no mob bosses, no enforcers, and no politicians in attendance—just Adrian, Clara, and four-year-old Lily seated at a candlelit table overlooking the sparkling city skyline.

Lily was happily eating a plate of artisanal pasta, her little legs swinging back and forth on the velvet chair, completely oblivious to the fact that half the billionaires in the state paid millions just to secure a reservation in this room.

Adrian poured a glass of sparkling cider for Clara, his dark eyes reflecting the warm candlelight.

"To new beginnings," Adrian said, raising his glass.

Clara smiled, clinking her glass against his with a clear, resonant ring. "To new beginnings."

Suddenly, Lily stopped chewing.

Her small nose twitched. She dropped her fork onto the plate with a soft clatter, her bright eyes widening as she sniffed the air around them.

Adrian and Mason—who was standing guard near the private exit—instantly stiffened, their instincts honed to razor-sharp alertness after everything they had survived.

"Lily?" Clara asked, her heart skipping a beat as she leaned down toward her daughter. "What is it, baby? Do you smell something bad?"

Lily didn't answer immediately. She took one deep, experimental breath through her nose, her little brow furrowing in intense concentration.

Then, a huge, radiant smile broke across her face.

"No, Mama," Lily giggled, kicking her feet happily. "It doesn't smell like bad medicine or old refrigerators anymore."

"What does it smell like, sweetie?" Adrian asked, his voice laced with a mixture of amusement and tension.

Lily pointed a small, sticky finger directly at the velvet box Adrian had slipped into his pocket earlier that evening—the one containing a ring of flawless, brilliant diamonds.

"It smells like chocolate cake and happy birthdays," Lily declared cheerfully. "And it smells like Uncle Adrian is finally going to stop being grumpy forever."

Adrian let out a deep, booming laugh—a sound that none of his enemies had ever lived long enough to hear—and reached across the table to take Clara’s hand as the city lights twinkled far below them in the night.
