Chapter 2 - The Syndicate's Shadow

The private elevator chime echoed through the silent floor, signaling an arrival that made Mason’s hand instinctively drop to the concealed firearm beneath his jacket.

The heavy brass doors slid open to reveal Victor Vance—not a doctor, but the ruthless, silver-haired head of the rival Boston syndicate, flanked by two armed enforcers. Officially, Victor was a pillar of the local philanthropic community. Unofficially, he was the man everyone suspected had ordered the hit on Adrian Vale at the harbor.

"I heard our esteemed colleague was having a rough night," Victor said smoothly, his voice dripping with false concern as he strolled down the corridor with the confidence of a man who owned the building. His eyes flicked to Mason, then to Clara, and finally lingered on little Lily. "A shame about the security here. Anyone can just wander into the ICU."

"Turn around, Victor," Mason said, his voice dropping into a lethal register. "You have ten seconds before I paint this hallway with your teeth."

Victor chuckled, a dry, rattling sound. "Relax, Mason. I’m just here to pay my respects. After all, if Adrian passes away tonight, my shipping lanes merge with his. We’re practically business partners now."

"You poisoned him," Clara blurted out before she could stop herself.

The entire hallway went dead silent. Victor stopped walking, turning his head slowly toward the young housekeeper in her plain gray uniform. A slow, predatory smile spread across his weathered face.

"Well, well. The help has a voice," Victor mocked, taking a step toward her. "And what does the little cleaning girl know about poison?"

"You smell like the basement," Lily piped up from the safety of Clara's shoulder, her small nose wrinkling in disgust. "You smell like the old metal boxes where the nasty medicine is kept."

Victor’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, a micro-expression of shock that did not go unnoticed by Mason. The older mob boss quickly recovered, laughing it off. "Cute kid. You should teach her some manners before someone teaches her permanently."

"Get out," Mason snarled, stepping directly into Victor’s path, his massive shoulders blocking the corridor. He pulled back his jacket just enough to flash the heavy steel grip of his Glock. "If you take another step toward them, or toward Adrian's room, I won't wait for a war. I'll execute you right here."

Victor held Mason's gaze for a tense, breathless standoff. The tension in the hallway was thick enough to cut with a knife. Finally, Victor raised his hands in mock surrender, his eyes gleaming with hidden menace.

"Enjoy your night, gentlemen. The king is dead, whether he breathes for another six hours or not."

As Victor and his men stepped back into the elevator, Clara felt a cold sweat break out across her spine. She looked down at Lily, whose small hands were gripping her collar so tightly her knuckles were white.

"Mama," Lily whispered into her ear. "The bad man dropped something."

Clara looked down at the linoleum floor where Victor had stood. Near the edge of the trash receptacle lay a small, metallic silver vial, no larger than a cigarette filter, leaking a faint, oily green droplet.
