Chapter 8 - The Antitoxin

Back at the private hospital, the sterile operating room was bathed in the amber glow of sunrise filtering through the high windows. Dr. Hannah Brooks stood over the IV drip, carefully injecting the freshly synthesized palladium-based antitoxin into Adrian’s primary line.

Within seconds, the monitors registered a drastic shift.

The faint gray discoloration around Adrian’s surgical incision began to recede, replaced by healthy, warm pink tissue. His heart rate stabilized into a strong, steady rhythm, and the low-grade fever that had plagued him for hours vanished completely.

"He's going to make a full recovery," Hannah exhaled, dropping her empty syringe into the biohazard bin with a tired smile. "It’s a miracle the tissue didn't go systemic."

"It wasn't a miracle," Mason said, leaning against the doorway with his arms crossed. "It was biology and a very observant three-year-old."

Down the hall in the private recovery suite, Lily was sitting cross-legged on a large sofa, happily coloring with a pack of crayons Adrian’s men had rushed to buy from a 24-hour store.

Clara sat in a chair beside her, watching the colorful drawings of rabbits and flowers spread across the table. Her hands were still slightly stained with grease and cleaning solution from the infiltrations, but for the first time in three years, the knot of constant anxiety in her chest had completely dissolved.

The door clicked open, and Adrian walked into the room. He was wearing a fresh black shirt, though his left arm was still supported by a light medical sling. He looked tired, but the formidable, sharp energy that defined him was entirely intact.

Lily looked up from her paper, her eyes wide. "Uncle Adrian! You’re not smelling wrong anymore."

Adrian walked over, kneeling down on one knee in front of the little girl’s chair, completely ignoring the aristocratic dignity that usually accompanied his presence.

"No, I'm not," Adrian said, his voice remarkably gentle as he looked at her. "And I hear you kept everyone out of trouble while I was asleep."

"I told them the bad air was coming," Lily said proudly, holding up a crayon drawing of a rabbit wearing a tiny detective hat. "This is Mr. Rabbit. He smells bad guys before they get close."

Adrian smiled—a genuine, rare smile that transformed his intimidating features completely. He took the drawing from her small hands and placed it carefully inside his breast pocket, right over his heart.

"Then I think Mr. Rabbit has earned a permanent position on my security detail," Adrian said softly.

He stood up and looked across the room at Clara. The silence between them was charged with unspoken history, mutual survival, and a bond forged in fire and blood.

"Clara," Adrian said quietly. "You don't have to clean another floor in this city ever again."
