Chapter 13 - The Ultimatum

I didn't go back to the Greenwich estate that night. The house felt like a tomb, smelling faintly of Vanessa’s expensive tuberose perfume that still lingered on the foyer cushions—a scent that now made my stomach heave. Instead, I drove out to the old marina in Brooklyn, parking my car near the water where the diesel fumes and salt spray offered a harsh, grounding reality.

My phone rang at 2:14 AM.

The caller ID simply read: Restricted.

I answered instantly. "Claire."

"It's not Claire," a gravelly, familiar voice replied. It was Linda, her mother. "Listen to me very carefully, Julian. You have exactly twelve hours to sign the papers Arthur Pendelton has sitting on his desk."

"I am not signing away my rights to my son," I snarled into the receiver. "You people think you can ruin me financially and then expect me to just roll over?"

"You ruined yourself the moment you decided your family was an inconvenience," Linda replied without a trace of emotion. "Claire doesn't want your money. In fact, every single penny of the corporate accounts she transferred has been locked into a blind trust for Noah's education and welfare. You can't touch it, and neither can she."

"Then what does she want?"

"Absolute silence," Linda said. "She wants a clean, uncontested divorce with full legal and physical custody. No visitation until Noah is five years old, and even then, only under supervised conditions approved by our legal team. If you fight us in court, we will release the complete corporate audit—including the federal tax evasion documentation—to the U.S. Attorney's office before breakfast."

My blood ran cold. Federal tax evasion carried a mandatory prison sentence. Claire wasn't just taking my money; she was holding a guillotine over my neck.

"Let me talk to her," I pleaded, my voice cracking. "Just let me hear my son's voice."

"You had your chance to hear him every night, Julian," Linda said softly. "Instead, you chose the Grand Meridian. Goodbye."

The line clicked dead.
