Chapter 23 - The Core of the LedgerThe interior of the Pier 42 administration building was a cavernous, concrete tomb. Massive rusted girders arched overhead like the ribs of a leviathan, and the floor was littered with shattered drywall, rusted filing cabinets, and ankle-deep puddles of stagnant rainwater.

Gideon led the way, his flashlight cutting a sharp beam through the damp gloom, his pistol held high and ready. Sienna flanked their rear, securing their retreat with an encrypted tactical rifle.
As they reached the central atrium, the darkness abruptly vanished.
Dozens of high-intensity halogen floodlights snapped on simultaneously from the upper catwalks, blinding them with a wall of harsh, clinical white glare. From the shadows of the mezzanine balcony above, a slow, mocking round of applause echoed down through the empty space.
"Magnificent," a voice purred.
A tall, gaunt man stepped out onto the rusted metal railing. He wore an immaculate white linen suit that seemed defiant of the damp decay around him. His hair was stark white, combed straight back, and his eyes were pale, watery blue.
"Arthur Pendelton is rotting in a federal supermax, Mr. Hail," the man said, leaning casually against the railing. "He lacked vision. He viewed the Ledger as a corporation. But I view it as an evolution."
"And you are?" Gideon demanded, keeping his pistol trained dead-center on the man's chest while stepping laterally to shield Ren and Nova.
"My name is Victor Vance," the man replied, tilting his head with a chillingly familiar family smirk. "Marcus’s older brother. The architect who actually built the system your little darlings are currently standing on."
Ren stepped out from behind Gideon’s shoulder, her voice ringing clear and cold across the hollow concrete atrium. "You didn't bring us here for the vault, Victor. The secondary vault was wiped the day the DOJ seized the offshore servers."

Victor Vance’s smile flickered, replaced by a sudden, razor-thin edge of malice. "Clever girl. No, the vault was just bait. I needed the dual genetic sequence active and in proximity to a live neural interface so I could download the true asset: the neural encryption mapping you two built into your after-school network."
Victor raised a heavy black remote control in his right hand. "Your brilliant little youth foundation, Ren? Every single kid you’ve helped, every shelter database you’ve integrated, every encrypted lifeline you’ve coded—it’s all currently wired straight into my global server network. Unless you plug your quantum deck into that terminal beside you and initiate the transfer, I push this button, and every shelter, every safe house, every kid you’ve ever protected gets scrubbed from the grid."
