Chapter 24 - The Digital Chess MatchThe silence in the concrete atrium was so absolute that the dripping of a distant water leak sounded like falling anvils.

Gideon’s finger tightened slightly on the trigger of his pistol. He calculated the distance, the trajectory, the wind shear through the broken windows. Too far. If he fired, Victor could press the detonator before the bullet cleared five feet.
"Don't do it, Ren," Gideon whispered, his voice strained. "We can isolate the network node from our end. Sienna is already—"
"Sienna’s signal was jammed the moment we stepped through the front door, Gideon," Ren interrupted softly. She wasn't looking at Victor Vance. She was looking down at the ruggedized quantum deck strapped across her chest.
Nova reached out, her hand resting gently on Ren’s arm. They didn't need to speak. Eleven years of shared silence, shared cold, and shared survival had forged a bond between them that no algorithm could calculate and no villain could fracture.
"You think you won, Victor?" Ren asked, looking up, her hazel eyes locking onto the pale blue stare of her uncle with terrifying composure. "You think our foundation is just a collection of databases you can hijack?"
Victor chuckled, his thumb resting hovering over the red button of the detonator. "It's all code, my dear. And code can always be rewritten by its master."
"My dad taught me something a long time ago," Ren said, her voice steady and clear. "People aren't just code. And systems built on cruelty always have a fatal flaw."
Before Victor could process her words, Ren slammed her palm down onto her quantum deck, not to download the network... but to execute an offensive root-kit bypass she and Nova had coded in secret over the last six months.
