CHAPTER 5 – The Mother Who Was Never Dead

Emily couldn't breathe.
The woman on the screen looked exactly like the photographs her grandfather had kept locked away for decades.
The same emerald eyes.
The same gentle smile.
The same silver necklace Emily had worn since childhood.
Her mother...
The woman she had visited every year at a cemetery.
Was alive.
"No..." Emily whispered.
"This can't be real."
The woman smiled softly.
"I'm sorry you had to learn the truth this way."
Daniel slammed his fist onto the control panel.
"Don't listen to her!"
"Everything she says is a lie!"
The woman laughed.
"A lie?"
"You buried an empty coffin, Daniel."
"You told a little girl her mother was dead."
"You stole twenty-three years from us."
Emily turned toward her grandfather.
"Tell me she's lying."
Daniel couldn't.
His silence answered the question.
Tears streamed down Emily's face.
"You let me cry at a fake grave..."
"You let me believe I was alone."
Daniel lowered his head.
"I did it to save your life."
Suddenly, every monitor in the vault switched to different camera angles.
Hundreds of armed men had surrounded the entire school.
Not dozens.
Hundreds.
Black armored trucks blocked every street.
Snipers occupied nearby rooftops.
Military drones hovered above the building.
Emily stared at the screens.
"Who are these people?"
Her mother answered calmly.
"The Genesis Syndicate."
"The organization your grandfather and I created."
Daniel shouted.
"We destroyed Genesis!"
"No," she replied.
"You destroyed the men who betrayed us."
"I rebuilt it."
Emily felt as though the room were spinning.
"So... you're the leader?"
Her mother's smile faded.
"I never wanted to be."
"But after your grandfather disappeared with you..."
"Someone had to take control."
At that moment, the vault alarm began screaming.
BREACH DETECTED.
The steel door shook violently.
Another explosion.
Then another.
The commander appeared on one of the security cameras, bleeding heavily as he fought off wave after wave of attackers.
"They're using military explosives!" he yelled through the radio.
"They'll be inside in less than two minutes!"
Daniel grabbed the leather journal and the silver microchip.
"We have to leave."
Emily pulled her hand away.
"No."
Daniel froze.
"I'm not running anymore."
She looked directly into the camera.
At the woman she had dreamed of seeing her entire life.
"If you're really my mother..."
"Come here."
"Look me in the eyes."
"And tell me why you abandoned me."
The woman remained silent for several seconds.
Then...
A single tear rolled down her cheek.
"I never abandoned you."
"I was the one protecting you."
Before Emily could answer—
The vault door exploded inward.
Smoke swallowed the room.
Masked soldiers stormed inside.
Lasers swept across the darkness.
Daniel stepped in front of Emily with only a pistol in his hand.
The commander staggered into the vault, covered in blood.
"There are too many!"
Then every attacker suddenly lowered their weapons.
They weren't aiming at Daniel.
They weren't aiming at the commander.
Every gun...
Pointed directly at Emily.
A masked captain slowly removed his helmet.
He smiled.
"Miss Emily..."
"The Board has been waiting twenty-five years."
May you like
"It's time for you to take your rightful place."
