Chapter 17 - The Ghost in the Machine

The honeymoon was brief, interrupted by the relentless demands of a global logistics empire. But the estate felt entirely different now. The heavy iron gates were permanently unlocked, and the sound of Emma’s laughter—bright, sharp, and entirely unfiltered—echoed down the long, polished hallways that used to feel like a tomb.
One evening, while reviewing the quarterly safety audits in the study, my secure terminal flashed a warning light.
It wasn't a syndicate attack. It was a localized data ping from an IP address inside the federal penitentiary where my brother Thomas was serving his sentence.
Luke stepped into the room, holding a encrypted flash drive. "The guards intercepted a letter Thomas tried to smuggle out to a corrupt parole board member. He’s trying to file an emergency appeal, claiming you forged the financial transfer documents that put him away."
I leaned back in my chair, spinning a gold fountain pen between my fingers. A cold, detached amusement washed over me. "Let him try. The federal inspector general has copies of his offshore Swiss accounts locked in three different jurisdictions. Thomas is writing his own permanent sentence."
Emma walked in carrying two mugs of black coffee, glancing at the terminal screen. She set my mug down and rested a hand on my shoulder, her fingers warm and grounding against the fabric of my shirt.
"Let him scream into the void," she said softly. "He lost because he thought power was about cages. He never understood that true power is choice."

I looked up at her, covering her hand with mine. "And what did you choose, Mrs. Vance?"
"To keep you out of trouble," she smirked. "Which is a full-time job with a terrifying salary."
