Chapter 7 - The Trap Closes

The counter-strike was executed with clinical, terrifying precision. By 2:00 PM, federal indictments dropped across the entire leadership of the North Side Outfit. Bank accounts were frozen, safehouses were raided by federal agents guided by "anonymous tips," and the men who had threatened Emma found themselves staring down thirty-year federal prison sentences without the possibility of bail.

I sat in my study, watching the live news reports on CNN showing the FBI hauling away my primary rivals in handcuffs.

Emma sat across from me in a leather armchair, nursing a cup of tea, watching the screen with wide eyes. "You didn't even have to fire a single shot at them."

"Violence is a clumsy tool, Emma," I said, swirling a glass of neat bourbon. "Strategy is an art form. My legs might be broken, but my chess game is sharper than ever."

She looked at me, her amber eyes softening. For weeks, the walls of this fortress had felt like a tomb. Now, with the storm clearing outside and the warm afternoon sun flooding through the reinforced glass, it felt like something else entirely. A home.

"Why me?" she asked softly, breaking the quiet hum of the electronics. "Out of all the people you could have kept close, why didn't you fire me the first day when I told you off?"

I set my glass down, wheeling closer to her chair until my knees touched hers. I couldn't feel the warmth of her legs against mine, but I could feel the electricity in the air between us.

"Because everyone else treated me like a broken piece of furniture," I said, my voice dropping to a low, raw intensity. "You treated me like a man. And for the first time in two years, you made me want to get back up."

She didn't look away. Instead, she leaned forward, her hand reaching out to gently touch my cheek, tracing the line of my jaw.

Before either of us could speak, the secure comms unit on the desk beeped sharply. Luke’s voice crackled through the speaker: "Boss, we have an unexpected visitor at the front gate. It's Detective Vance... your estranged brother. And he's brought a federal warrant."
