Chapter 19 - The Legacy Project

With the criminal underworld permanently purged and the logistics empire running like clockwork, Emma and I turned our attention to something unexpected: redemption.

We established the Carter-Vance Foundation, utilizing millions in seized syndicate assets to fund memory-care facilities across Illinois—ensuring that families drowning in medical debt and dementia care would never have to choose between bankruptcy and losing their loved ones.

The grand opening of the flagship facility on the North Side drew television cameras, politicians, and reporters from every major network.

I stood at the podium in a tailored charcoal suit, my cane resting against the wooden ledge, my posture straight and unbroken. Emma stood right beside me, holding the ribbon-cutting scissors.

"For years, this city built its foundations on fear, walls, and shadows," I spoke into the microphone, my voice carrying clear and steady across the crowded courtyard. "We believed that safety could only be bought with dominance. But real strength isn't measured by the height of your fortress, or the enemies you put in chains. It’s measured by who you choose to pull up when they have nowhere else to stand."

The applause that erupted was deafening. Flashbulbs blinded us from the press gallery, but I didn't blink. I looked down at Emma, who smiled up at me with eyes that held the entire universe.
