Chapter 9 - The Ultimate Checkmate

I didn't resist as the cold steel clicked around my wrists. I simply let out a low, quiet chuckle that made my brother’s smile falter.

"What's so funny?" Thomas demanded, pulling out his radio to call for transport.

"You always were the brilliant legal mind, Tom," I said, my voice smooth and mocking. "You read the routing data. You saw the encrypted nodes. But did you check who signed the administrative transfer papers for those nodes twenty-four hours ago?"

Thomas frowned, his brow furrowing. "What are you talking about?"

"Read the fine print on the warrant, brother," I whispered.

Emma, catching my drift with her sharp intellect, smoothly stepped behind Thomas's dropped briefcase, picked up a copy of the federal disclosure form, and scanned the bottom line. Her eyes widened.

"The signature..." Emma said, her voice ringing clear across the silent room. "The administrative transfer was signed by the Senior Federal Prosecutor’s office... signed by Thomas Vance himself, routing the assets into a federal forfeiture account managed by his own department."

The marshals holding my cuffs instantly paused, slowly turning their heads to look at Thomas.

Color drained completely from my brother's face. "That's... that's a forgery! He framed me!"

"You've been skimming from seized syndicate assets for three years, Tom," I said, my voice dropping the theatrical edge, turning deadly serious. "I didn't build a monopoly; I built a trap, and you walked right into it because your ambition made you blind. The federal inspector general has already been sent the complete financial ledger. Look at your phone."

Thomas’s cell phone buzzed violently in his breast pocket. With shaking hands, he pulled it out. One glance at the screen—notifying him of an immediate suspension and internal affairs audit—made his knees buckle.

"Take him out of my house," I ordered quietly.

The two federal marshals exchanged a heavy look, slowly released my cuffs, and instead turned toward Thomas, snapping the steel bracelets onto the federal prosecutor's wrists instead.

"Daniel, you son of a bitch—" Thomas screamed as they dragged him out of the study.

The heavy oak doors slammed shut behind them. Silence descended once more upon the estate.
