Chapter 13 - The Two-Billion-Dollar Trap

By midnight, news of the supposed "infant emergency" at the Phoenix Tower reached the global markets. Panic selling erupted in London and Tokyo. Phoenix Global stock plummeted twelve percent in pre-market trading as short sellers flooded the floor with sell orders.

In a hidden villa overlooking the Swiss Alps, Julian Vance sat in a plush leather armchair, smoking a Cuban cigar. On his monitors, the stock chart was bleeding red. Beside him sat his chief financial officer, grinning widely.

"Sir! Phoenix Global stock has lost six billion dollars in market cap!" the CFO cheered. "Vance Capital’s short positions are up three hundred percent! If this panic continues until the New York bell, we will walk away with over two billion dollars in net profit!"

Julian laughed heavily, swirling his glass of cognac. "That arrogant bitch thought she could ruin my daughter Vanessa and throw her in prison! She thought she owned the world because she inherited her father’s pocketbook! I’ll strip her of every cent, buy her company for pennies on the dollar, and leave her weeping over her ruined life!"

"Should we execute the final dump?" the CFO asked, finger hovering over the terminal.

"Dump everything!" Julian roared. "Leverage our entire offshore reserve! Five hundred million dollars in margin! Break her!"

At 9:30 AM Eastern Time, the New York Stock Exchange bell rang.

Vance Capital executed its massive, five-hundred-million-dollar short order, expecting the stock to crash into absolute oblivion.

Suddenly, the screen froze.

A green wall of buying volume—unprecedented in Wall Street history—erupted onto the order book. A staggering ten billion dollars in liquid cash slammed into the market, instantly absorbing every single short contract Julian Vance had placed.

The stock didn't crash. It skyrocketed fifty percent in thirty seconds.

Julian dropped his cigar, his eyes bursting wide. "What... what is that?! Where is that buying power coming from?!"

The CFO’s face turned gray. "Sir! It’s... it’s the Sovereign Wealth Fund of the United Arab Emirates! Joined by Vanguard Holdings! They’re buying every available share! It’s a massive short squeeze!"

Before Julian could process the horror, his phone chimed with an incoming video call. He answered it with trembling hands.

The screen lit up to reveal Claire sitting in her pristine Dubai office, entirely serene, holding her two healthy, smiling babies in her arms.

"Good morning, Julian," Claire said, her voice dripping with ice. "I believe you owe my broker two point four billion dollars in margin calls."
