Chapter 8 - The Poisoned Vitamin Scheme

Three days later, as the legal net tightened around Everett and his family, Nathan brought me a startling discovery uncovered during the police search of Everett’s seized Westchester estate.

"Chairwoman, during the forensic sweep of Everett’s master bedroom safe, investigators found a hidden compartment," Nathan said, his face unusually dark and serious. "Inside were several prescription bottles labeled under a fake name."

I tilted my head. "What kind of medication?"

"We sent samples to our central toxicology lab for rapid analysis," Nathan explained, placing a medical report on my desk. "Claire... for the last eight years, Everett had been secretly swapping your daily organic wellness vitamins with low-grade fertility suppressants and hormone disruptors."

A cold, deadly shock ran through my veins. The room seemed to plunge into freezing temperatures.

For ten years, I had blamed myself. I had spent countless nights crying quietly in the dark, visiting fertility specialists, undergoing painful procedures, believing my body was broken—believing I was truly "barren" as they had so cruelly mocked me.

And all along, my husband had been poisoning me so I would never produce an heir who could legally claim the Vanguard estate.

"The toxins were designed to cause temporary chemical infertility without leaving obvious traces in standard blood tests," Nathan continued, his voice trembling with quiet rage. "He made sure you could never get pregnant, so he could eventually use your 'barrenness' as a public excuse to divorce you and demand a massive spousal settlement."

I sat in silence for a long moment. My hands didn't shake. My eyes didn't fill with tears. Instead, a terrifying, absolute clarity settled over my mind.

"Nathan," I said softly, my voice devoid of any human emotion.

"Yes, Madame Chairwoman?"

"Ensure the prosecutor adds attempted toxic harm and medical battery to Everett’s indictment charges. Make sure he faces the maximum sentence without possibility of parole."

"Consider it done."

I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass window, looking out over the roaring metropolis.

He thought he had rendered me barren. He thought he had stolen my future. But he didn't know my greatest secret of all.

I picked up my personal phone and dialed a private number at Manhattan’s elite fertility center.

"Dr. Aris?" I said calmly into the receiver. "This is Claire. Prepare the implantation procedure for next month. It’s time to bring my twins into the world."
