Chapter 14 - Blood on the Tarmac

Julian Vance stood frozen, the color draining completely from his face as he stared at the video screen.

"You... you lied," Julian stammered, his fingers digging into the arms of his chair. "The children... the press releases..."

"Were all manufactured by me to bait a rat out of his hole," Claire replied coldly. "You placed a five-hundred-million-dollar naked short trade using unverified black-market leverage. Right now, the Securities and Exchange Commission, along with Interpol, are freezing all assets linked to Vance Capital."

"You think you’ve won?!" Julian screamed at the screen, losing his mind. "I have armies! I have connections you can’t even fathom!"

"You had connections, Julian," Claire corrected softly. "Three minutes ago, my tactical unit in London secured Elena’s daughter unharmed. At the same time, Swiss federal police breached the gates of your villa in Zurich. Look out your window."

Julian whirled around. Outside the glass walls of his Swiss mansion, tactical police helicopters descended through the mountain fog. Armed officers poured out of armored vehicles, breaching the perimeter gates with explosive charges.

"No!" Julian shrieked, dropping the phone. He reached into his desk drawer for a firearm, but the glass windows blew inward with a deafening blast. Federal officers swarmed the room, tackling Julian to the floor and pinning his face against the Persian rug.

As the handcuffs clicked into place, the phone lying on the carpet broadcasted Claire’s calm, cruel voice one last time:

"Give my regards to your daughter when you join her in prison, Julian."

However, just as Claire disconnected the call, Nathan rushed into her office without knocking, his face grim.

"Claire... we have a catastrophic situation in New York."

I stayed crouched on the floor, the blood humming faintly in my ears, while Claudia’s sharp heels clicked away toward the foyer, her displeasure radiating like a physical chill.

"Twenty minutes ago, during a high-security prison transfer between Upstate New York and a federal courthouse... the transport van carrying Everett Hale was ambushed," Nathan reported, showing her live news footage of a burning highway. "A mercenary team blew the doors off the vehicle. Everett Hale was pulled out alive. He’s gone."
