The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel echoed with the sharp, shrill laughter of my mother-in-law, Diane. Chapter 19 - The Fire in the Water

Everett’s mind completely fractured under the weight of the revelation. He stumbled backward, staring at the DNA documents on the screen, his breath coming in wild, ragged hitches.

"My mother... Julian... Vanessa..." he whispered, realization dawning on him like a toxic poison. "They all used me... everyone used me..."

"You used yourself, Everett," Claire said, stepping closer to Nathan. "Because you were too weak to earn anything on your own."

In that second of utter distraction, Nathan threw his body weight against Everett’s legs, knocking him off balance. The gun flew from Everett’s hand, skittering across the deck.

"Claire! Get to the helipad!" Nathan yelled, struggling with Everett on the floor.

Claire didn't hesitate. She grabbed a heavy steel ice bucket from the bar and slammed it with full force against the side of Everett’s head. Everett groaned, collapsing back onto the deck, dazed and bleeding.

Claire quickly cut Nathan’s ties with a cigar cutter from the bar.

"The detonator!" Nathan gasped, pointing to Everett’s hand.

Everett, lying on his back, grinned a horrific, bloody smile. His thumb hovered over the red button of the explosive vest. "If I’m going to hell... you’re coming with me, Claire!"

"Not today, Everett," Claire said smoothly.

She pressed a button on her wrist communicator. "Captain! Eject the rear deck module!"

Before Everett could react, the entire stern section of the superyacht—a detachable emergency platform—unlatched with heavy hydraulic blasts.

Everett screamed as the platform, along with his broken body, slid rapidly backward into the freezing, churning waves of the Mediterranean Sea.

Claire stood at the railing, watching the burning debris sink slowly into the deep, dark abyss. She didn't blink. She didn't look away.
