Chapter 9 - The Billion-Dollar Rebirth

One month later, the trial of the century concluded in Manhattan Supreme Court.
The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity with journalists, corporate titans, and curiosity seekers. Everett Hale, dressed in a faded orange prison jumpsuit with wrists chained to his waist, stood before the judge. Beside him sat his mother, Diane, and his former mistress, Vanessa, both wearing matching prison attire.
The judge slammed his gavel down, his voice echoing sharply across the room.
"Everett Hale, for the charges of grand corporate embezzlement, tax fraud, conspiracy, and medical battery, this court sentences you to twenty-five years in state penitentiary without the possibility of early parole."
Everett collapsed back into his chair, his face completely hollow, letting out a lifeless gasp.
"Diane Hale, for conspiracy and financial fraud, you are sentenced to ten years. Vanessa Vance, for grand larceny and identity fraud, seven years."
As the bailiffs stepped forward to haul the three weeping, broken prisoners away toward the holding cells, Everett looked toward the gallery one last time.
Sitting in the very front row, wearing a brilliant white winter coat, was me. Beside me stood my new executive team. I didn't look at him with hatred. I didn't look at him with triumph. I looked at him as if he were nothing more than a speck of dust swept off a clean floor.
As he was dragged through the side door, screaming my name into the empty air, I stood up and walked out the front doors of the courthouse into a sea of flashing camera lights.
Hundreds of reporters shoved microphones into my face.
"Madame Chairwoman! How does it feel to take back your company?!"
"Claire! What is the future of Vanguard Holdings?!"
I stopped at the top of the marble steps, looking out over the crowd of journalists.

"Today, Hale Enterprises is officially dissolved," I announced clearly into the microphones. "In its place, we launch Phoenix Global Infrastructure—a ten-billion-dollar enterprise dedicated to sustainable technology and funding healthcare centers for women recovering from domestic and financial abuse."
The crowd erupted into thunderous applause. The reporters snapped photos frantically as I smiled, turning to step into my waiting sedan.
