Chapter 18 - The Superyacht Siege

The cold Mediterranean wind whipped against Claire’s hair as she walked onto the top deck of The Empress, Everett keeping his pistol pressed firmly against her back. The harbor was silent, the dark sea stretching out into the horizon.
Nathan was forced to walk ahead of them, his arms bound behind his back.
Once on the main deck, Everett slammed the heavy steel security doors, locking them inside the vessel.
"Now!" Everett yelled, gasping for air as his paranoia reached a fever pitch. "You are going to log into your master banking terminal on this yacht! You are going to transfer five hundred million dollars to an offshore untraceable crypto wallet, and then you are going to order a helicopter to fly me to North Africa!"
Claire walked calmly over to the mahogany bar on the deck, poured two glasses of scotch, and turned around. She held one glass out toward him.
"You really don't get it, do you, Everett?" she asked softly.
"Get what?! Stop talking and open the terminal!" he roared, waving the gun.
"You think Julian Vance broke you out of prison because he cared about you?" Claire chuckled, taking a sip of scotch. "Julian Vance broke you out to act as a distraction so his own legal team could negotiate a plea bargain with federal prosecutors."
Everett blinked, a flicker of confusion breaking through his madness. "What... what are you talking about? Julian is Vanessa's father!"
"Julian Vance is your father, Everett," Claire dropped the bomb calmly.
Everett froze as if struck by lightning. "What... what did you say?"
"Thirty years ago, before your mother married your father, she had an affair with an up-and-coming corporate raider named Julian Vance," Claire revealed, tossing a thick DNA analysis document onto the table. "Diane kept it a secret her whole life. Julian knew. He used Vanessa to seduce you because he wanted to merge his bloodline with the Hale name and steal Vanguard’s assets. You were never a CEO, Everett. You were an incestuous pawn in your biological father's game."

Everett dropped his glass. It shattered on the teak deck. He grabbed his head with his free hand, screaming in sheer psychological agony. "No! No! You're lying! You're trying to mess with my head!"
"Check the files on the screen, Everett," Claire said coldly. "Your whole life... a complete, pathetic illusion."
