Chapter 17 - The Uninvited GuestBefore Marcus could reach the vehicle, the sedan came to a smooth halt at the base of the front porch steps.

The passenger door opened, and a woman stepped out.

She wore an elegant, dark wool trench coat, her silver-streaked hair tied back neatly, and sunglasses covering her eyes. When she removed the glasses, Ethan felt the breath leave his lungs entirely.

It wasn't an assassin. It wasn't a corporate spy.

It was Elena Carter.

The aunt everyone believed had died in a yachting accident decades ago. The woman whose digital vault had saved the empire.

"Hello, Ethan," Elena said, her voice rich, steady, and filled with deep emotion as she looked up at the porch. "You've grown into quite a man."

Ethan stood frozen for a moment before rushing down the steps. "Aunt Elena? We thought... the records said you were gone."

"Records can be rewritten by people who want us forgotten," Elena smiled softly, tears welling in her eyes. "I had to stay in the shadows while Margaret and her syndicate held power. But now... I heard the estate was finally filled with laughter again."
