Chapter 3 - The Nursery of Ghosts

That evening, the house was dead silent when Nathan returned. The smart-home display showed that Vanessa was out at her weekly charity committee meeting—an alibi that usually kept her away for a solid three hours.
Nathan stood outside the closed door of the newly decorated nursery. The pastel blue walls seemed to mock him in the dim hallway light. With trembling fingers, he turned the brass knob. It clicked softly.
The room smelled faintly of lavender and new wood. In the center sat an expensive crib draped in imported European lace, piled high with plush stuffed animals. A high-end rocking chair sat by the window, beside a towering stack of designer baby clothes, all brand new with the price tags still dangling.
Nathan stepped inside, feeling like a trespasser in his own home.
Ethan’s words echoed in his ears: Treat it like a crime scene.
Nathan didn't look at the crib. He didn't look at the toys. He walked straight to the custom white wardrobe built into the corner of the room—the one Vanessa kept padlocked with a heavy combination lock. She claimed it held heirloom christening gowns and delicate woolen blankets sent by her estranged aunt overseas.
He pulled a small toolkit from his pocket—a set of tension wrenches and a hook pick he had hastily bought at a hardware store down the street after watching a twenty-minute tutorial online. His hands shook violently. The first attempt slipped. The second time, the internal tumbler clicked with a crisp, metallic snap.
The padlock swung open.
Nathan pulled the cabinet doors wide. The interior wasn't filled with delicate lace or vintage heirlooms.
Instead, the shelves were stacked neatly with heavy-duty cardboard shipping boxes labeled with commercial courier barcodes. Nathan sliced open the tape of the top box with his car key and pulled back layers of bubble wrap.
Inside lay a collection of medical-grade silicone prosthetic appliances—specifically, high-definition silicone belly bumps featuring realistic vascular detailing and variable skin-tone pigmentation. There were three different sizes in the box, representing progressive trimesters, along with specialized skin adhesives, medical solvent removers, and instruction manuals on how to blend the silicone edges with liquid latex.
Beneath the prosthetics sat a stack of thick manila folders.
Nathan’s hands trembled as he flipped open the top folder. Inside were certified financial statements, offshore bank account routing numbers, and a draft of a post-nuptial asset transfer agreement dated six months prior, giving Vanessa absolute, unencumbered ownership of Nathan’s tech startup holdings in the event of a sudden, catastrophic corporate restructuring or marital dissolution.
And clipped to the back of the folder was a receipt from a high-end specialty theatrical makeup studio in downtown Manhattan, dated exactly one week before Vanessa announced her "pregnancy," totaling twelve thousand dollars for custom prosthetic fabrication and psychological profile consulting.
Nathan dropped the papers. The room seemed to spin on its axis.
It wasn't just a lie to save a marriage. It was a hostile takeover. Vanessa hadn't trapped him to keep him; she had trapped him to fleece him dry, utilizing a fabricated heir as legal leverage to force a multi-million-dollar settlement under emergency family law provisions.

Suddenly, the front door downstairs unlocked with a sharp click. Footsteps echoed in the foyer.
“Nathan? Honey, are you home?” Vanessa’s sweet, melodic voice drifted up the staircase, cutting through the silence like a scalpel.
