Chapter 8 - The Price of a Phantom Heir

The silence in the examination room was absolute, broken only by Vanessa’s ragged, sobbing breaths as she knelt on the floor, clutching the discarded silicone shell to her chest like a mother shielding a dead infant.

The door swung open. Eleanor stood in the threshold, her face drained of all color, her jaw slack as she stared down at her daughter sprawled among the wreckage of her own grand deception.

"Vanessa..." Eleanor whispered, her voice trembling with absolute disbelief and humiliation. "What... what have you done?"

"She did it for the shares, Eleanor," Nathan said coldly, dropping the bloodied adhesive straps onto the floor beside the crying woman. He pulled a folded document from his coat pocket—the certified forensic investigation report signed by Ethan and countersigned by senior corporate legal counsel—and tossed it onto the table. "Twelve thousand dollars for a theatrical prosthetic. A fabricated lineage. Attempted corporate asset extortion under fraudulent familial pretenses."

Vanessa looked up, her mascara running in black streaks down her cheeks, her once-pristine facade entirely dissolved into a mask of pure, venomous hatred.

"You think you won?" she hissed, her voice vibrating with manic fury as she scrambled to her feet, pointing a shaking finger at Nathan’s chest. "You think a simple trick exposes everything? I know secrets about your company, Nathan! Dark secrets your board members wouldn't want leaking to the federal regulators! If you send me to prison, I’ll drag your entire empire down into the dirt with me!"

Nathan didn't raise his voice. He didn't blink. He simply leaned down, looking her dead in the eye with a terrifying, unflinching calm.

"Let the empire burn," Nathan whispered, his voice steady as a rock. "Because out of the ashes, at least I finally got my life back."

Two hours later, flashing red and blue police cruisers illuminated the wet asphalt outside St. Jude’s Hospital as two officers escorted Vanessa out in handcuffs, her face hidden beneath her expensive cashmere coat.

Across the city, sitting in his apartment under the warm glow of his editing monitors, Ethan clicked Save Project on a file simply titled: Case Closed.

Nathan stood on the hospital steps, breathing in the cool, crisp night air for the first time in six months. The weight was gone. The illusion had shattered. And as he looked up at the quiet, star-studded sky, Nathan finally smiled—ready to write the first real chapter of his life.
