Chapter 6 - The Clinical Theater

The waiting room of St. Jude’s private obstetrics wing smelled of sterile antiseptic and expensive jasmine potpourri.

Vanessa sat regally in a plush leather armchair, her posture immaculate in a cream designer cashmere dress. Her mother, Eleanor—a formidable woman with razor-sharp cheekbones and ice-blue eyes—sat beside her, dabbing a handkerchief against her immaculate wrists.

"Nathan, I must say, dragging us across town to this specific facility for a routine scan is entirely unnecessary," Eleanor sniffed, adjusting her diamond-encrusted brooch. "Vanessa has been delicate. The baby has been kicking furiously all morning. Stress is the last thing my daughter needs right now, especially with the impending property division hanging over your heads."

Nathan stood by the frosted glass window, his hands shoved deep into his trench coat pockets. He hadn't slept in three days, but his mind felt sharper, colder, and more focused than it had in years.

"Just want to make sure everything's healthy, Eleanor," Nathan replied evenly, not turning around. "After all... you can never be too sure about what's developing beneath the surface."

Vanessa shot him a sharp, suspicious glance, her eyes narrowing slightly. "Is everything alright, darling? You've been acting rather... detached lately."

"Just anticipating the big reveal, honey," Nathan said, turning around with a smile that didn't reach his eyes. "Just anticipating the truth."

Before Vanessa could probe further, the heavy oak door of Exam Room 4 clicked open. A tall man in a crisp white lab coat, wearing surgical scrubs and a face mask, stepped out.

"Mrs. Sterling?" the doctor called out, his voice deep and authoritative. "We're ready for you now. Dr. Harrison has stepped out for an emergency consult, so I’ll be performing your high-resolution structural sonogram today."

Vanessa stood up smoothly, smoothing down her dress with a confident, placid expression. "Wonderful. Shall we, mother?"

"I'll wait right here," Eleanor waved a hand dismissively. "Too much sterile environment makes my sinuses act up."

Nathan followed Vanessa into the dim examination room. The lights were lowered, casting a pale, clinical blue glow over the diagnostic monitors. A secondary wall-mounted display screen flickered quietly in the corner, currently displaying a generic hospital logo screensaver.

"Lie back on the table, please, Mrs. Sterling," the disguised technician instructed, gesturing toward the leather examination recliner.

Vanessa hesitated for a fraction of a second, her eyes darting toward the auxiliary cable plugged into the side of the ultrasound machine's console. A tiny, self-satisfied smirk played at the corner of her lips. She assumed this was just another clinical hurdle she could easily bypass with her pre-loaded digital media player hidden in her designer tote bag.

"Do mind the positioning," Vanessa murmured, climbing onto the table and adjusting her dress so the hem sat precisely at her mid-thigh. "The baby is quite sensitive to pressure."

Nathan stood directly beside the main console, his fingers resting casually on the master video switcher keyboard—the one Ethan had remotely synchronized from his downtown workstation.

"Let's see what you're carrying, Vanessa," Nathan whispered softly.

The technician picked up the cold ultrasound transducer probe. "Applying conductive gel now."

He squirted a dollop of transparent ultrasound gel directly onto the center of Vanessa’s rigid, perfectly rounded stomach contour beneath the stretched silk of her dress.

Then, he pressed the probe firmly against the apex of her abdomen.
