Chapter 7 - The Monitor Goes Black

On the primary medical monitor, the screen remained stubbornly, terrifyingly blank.

No rhythmic swoosh of a fetal heartbeat. No shimmering, gray-scale static of amniotic fluid. No fluttering shadow of a developing embryo.

Instead, the display showed a dense, completely opaque, impenetrable wall of solid gray density—the distinct acoustic signature of high-density medical silicone reflecting sound waves straight back without a single millimeter of internal refraction.

Vanessa’s placid, confident smile froze instantly. The color drained from her face, leaving her skin the chalky white of a corpse.

"Oh," the technician said smoothly, his voice echoing loudly in the silent room. "That's... odd. There appears to be zero acoustic transmission. No fluid pocket, no tissue density variation. Just a solid, uniform polymer block."

"You... you're holding the probe wrong!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice cracking with sudden, unadulterated panic as she bolted upright on the examination table, her hands flying down to press frantically against her stomach. "You incompetent fool, let me adjust it—!"

"No need to adjust, Vanessa," Nathan’s voice cut through the room like a crack of thunder.

He reached over and hit a single keystroke on the console.

Instantly, the wall-mounted auxiliary display in the corner flickered out of screensaver mode. But it wasn't showing the ultrasound room.

The live feed switched directly to the corporate boardroom across the city, where Vanessa’s high-priced divorce lawyers, Nathan’s board of directors, and Eleanor were currently seated around a mahogany conference table, watching the high-definition broadcast in stunned, horrified silence.

Simultaneously, Nathan reached out and sharply tugged at the hem of Vanessa’s cashmere dress.

The fabric pulled away.

There was no swelling belly. There was no flesh, no life, no baby.

Attached securely to her torso with heavy-duty medical adhesive straps was a hollow, flesh-toned silicone prosthetic belly—complete with molded artificial veins and a synthetic navel—ripped right off her body in front of the live camera feed.

Vanessa let out a feral, guttural shriek of pure rage and humiliation, lunging forward like a cornered animal to claw at Nathan’s face.

Nathan didn't flinch. He simply stepped back, letting her collapse into a heap of expensive silk and pathetic, shattered lies on the cold linoleum floor.
