Chapter 2 - SUNRISE OVER A RUINED EMPIREThe first rays of amber light cut through the morning mist, painting the manicured lawns of Sinclair Manor in a deceptive glow of serenity. Upstairs in the master suite, Vanessa Sinclair stretched luxuriously beneath high-thread-count Egyptian cotton sheets.

Pathetic old fool, Vanessa thought, kicking off the duvet and slipping her feet into plush velvet slippers. She probably spent the night freezing in the servants' quarters or sleeping in her beat-up sedan.

Vanessa strode down the sweeping grand staircase, wrapped in a designer silk robe, eager to survey her domain and complete the humiliation. She expected to find Martha cowering in the kitchen, packing her meager belongings, or perhaps already gone, leaving behind a clean house ready for Vanessa’s triumphant reign.

Instead, the ground floor was dead silent. No smell of freshly brewed Colombian coffee. No sound of the vacuum cleaner.

"Martha!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice bouncing off the marble pillars of the foyer. "Martha, you miserable leech! Get in here right now and pour my coffee before I call the county sheriff to drag you off the property!"

Heavy footsteps echoed from the eastern wing, but they didn't belong to Martha. Two men in sharp, charcoal-gray suits stepped into the foyer. They weren't domestic staff; they looked like federal marshals or corporate liquidators. Walking directly behind them, dressed impeccably in a tailored midnight-blue pantsuit, was Martha Collins. Her silver hair was pinned back in a severe, elegant chignon, and a diamond brooch—one that had belonged to the late patriarch, Arthur Sinclair—glittered sharply on her lapel.

Vanessa froze on the third step down. Her jaw slacked, her breath catching in her throat. "What... what is the meaning of this? Why is this old hag still inside my house? And who the hell let you men in?"

Martha stopped at the base of the stairs, looking up at Vanessa not with the terrified eyes of a beaten servant, but with the icy, clinical gaze of a predator looking down at a cornered rat.

"Good morning, Vanessa," Martha said calmly, her voice carrying an eerie, resonant authority. "Or should I say... former mistress of the house."
