Chapter 8 - THE FALL FROM GRACEWhile the boardroom celebrated a new era, miles away across the city, Vanessa Sinclair was experiencing the brutal, unfiltered reality of the world she had so casually condemned others to.

Standing on the damp sidewalk outside the iron gates of Sinclair Manor, Vanessa stared in absolute disbelief at the three large, black garbage bags piled neatly beside the stone pillar.

"No! You can't do this! Do you know who I am?!" Vanessa shrieked, hammering her designer-shod fists against the locked iron security gate. "Open this gate right now! I'll ruin you! I'll have every single one of you arrested!"

The security guard inside the booth didn't even look up from his phone. He simply pressed a button, activating an automated loudspeaker that droned monotonously: “Private property. Trespassers will be prosecuted. Please step away from the gates.”

"Useless pigs!" Vanessa screamed, kicking the iron bars until her toe throbbed in agony through her velvet slipper.

Passersby on the suburban sidewalk slowed down, staring and whispering as they pointed phones at the disheveled woman in a silk bathrobe standing beside garbage bags in broad daylight. Vanessa whipped her head around, her face twisted with rage. "What are you looking at, you peeping peasants?! Keep walking or I'll sue the skin off your bones!"

She reached frantically into the pockets of her silk robe for her phone, desperate to call her attorney, her banker, her friends—anyone who could rescue her from this nightmare.

Her pockets were completely empty.

Not a single credit card. No cash. No phone. Her entire digital life, her wealth, her identity, and her social standing had been locked behind doors that now viewed her as nothing more than a dangerous intruder.

As a cold autumn wind whipped down the street, rustling the fallen leaves around her feet, Vanessa let out a shrill, hysterical cry of pure rage and defeat, collapsing onto her garbage bags in the middle of the sidewalk as the rain began to fall once more.
