Chapter 4 - THE SCAR ON THE FACEFor a long, agonizing moment, the grand foyer was dead silent. You could hear the faint ticking of the grandfather clock and the heavy patter of rain against the glass dome above.

Vanessa staggered backward, grabbing the polished wooden banister for support. Her knees buckled slightly, and the world seemed to tilt on its axis.

"W-wife?" Vanessa stammered, shaking her head violently, denying the reality crashing down upon her. "No! That's impossible! She's a maid! She cleaned toilets! She scrubbed floors! She washed my clothes! My father hired her out of an agency thirty years ago! She's a servant!"

"She played the part brilliantly, didn't she?" a cold, smooth voice interrupted.

Martha took a slow step up the stairs, closing the physical distance between them until she was standing just inches below Vanessa. She raised her right hand—the same hand Vanessa had struck just twelve hours prior. With deliberate slowness, Martha turned her face to the side, pointing directly at the faint, fading pink mark across her cheek where Vanessa's diamond ring had cut her skin.

"Twenty-five years ago, when your father fell ill and you maneuvered your way into his good graces to manipulate his will, I made a choice," Martha whispered, her voice dropping to a terrifyingly intimate register. "I watched you grow into a selfish, narcissistic, cruel parasite. I watched you abuse every staff member, embezzle funds from the family charity, and treat human beings like disposable trash."

Martha's eyes flashed with a lethal, razor-sharp intensity.

"So I stayed. I put on the uniform. I took the insults. I let you scream at me, humiliate me, and yesterday... I even let you strike me across the face. Do you know why, Vanessa?"

Vanessa could not speak. Her throat was completely paralyzed. She shook her head in sheer terror.

"Because under Section 14 of the Sinclair Family Trust bylaws," Martha continued, her voice ringing out crystal clear, "physical assault, financial malfeasance, or attempted illegal eviction of the primary trust holder triggers an immediate, irrevocable forfeiture clause. By striking me yesterday afternoon on camera—yes, Vanessa, the security cameras in the hallway caught every single second—you officially violated the conduct covenant. You didn't just fire me. You just signed your own financial death warrant."
