Chapter 7 - THE BOARDROOM COUPThe executive boardroom on the top floor of the Sinclair Global Tower in downtown Manhattan was the most exclusive room in the city. Polished teakwood, floor-to-ceiling glass walls overlooking Central Park, and leather executive chairs seating the most ruthless corporate board members in the country.

At precisely 1:55 PM, the heavy double doors swung open.

The board members, who had been murmuring amongst themselves about an emergency summons called by legal counsel, turned expectantly toward the entrance, assuming Vanessa Sinclair was about to strut in late as usual.

Instead, Mr. Sterling walked in first, holding open the door. Behind him walked Martha Sinclair, wearing a charcoal-gray Chanel coat over her blue suit, carrying herself with an air of absolute, unassailable power.

Jonathan Vance, the senior managing director and Vanessa's primary corporate ally, slammed his hand down on the table, standing up aggressively.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Vance barked, his face flushing crimson. "Who let this woman in here? Security! This is a restricted executive floor! Get this cleaning lady out of here before I call building management!"

Not a single board member moved. Mr. Sterling calmly took his seat at the head of the mahogany table, pulled out a thick document, and slid it toward the center.

"Sit down, Mr. Vance," Sterling said coldly. "And shut your mouth before you incur liabilities you cannot afford."

"Liabilities? Are you out of your mind?!" Vance sneered, looking around the room at the other board members for support. "This is Martha! She scrubs toilets at Vanessa’s estate! She has no business—"

"She has every business," a calm, authoritative voice cut through the room.

Martha walked slowly to the head of the table, placing her palms flat against the polished teakwood, leaning slightly forward as she locked her piercing gray eyes onto Vance.

"Sit down, Jonathan," Martha repeated, using the exact same tone Vanessa had used to dismiss her for a quarter-century.

Something in Martha's eyes—the sheer, terrifying gravity of absolute ownership—forced Vance to swallow hard. Slowly, reluctantly, he sank back down into his leather chair.

"As of twelve o'clock today," Martha stated clearly, her voice echoing off the glass walls, "the controlling voting shares of Sinclair Global, representing eighty-one percent of the corporation, have been legally transferred to my name, backed by the probate court and the primary marriage settlement of Arthur Sinclair."

Silence descended upon the boardroom so heavy you could hear a pin drop. Vance stared at the documents Sterling slid across the table, his eyes darting frantically across the signatures, seals, and notarized stamps.

"No..." Vance whispered, turning completely white. "That's... that's impossible. Vanessa said..."

"Vanessa doesn't know a damn thing about business," Martha said quietly, straightening up and buttoning her coat. "And as your very first executive order under my chairmanship, Mr. Vance... you are fired. Clean out your desk by five o'clock, or I'll have you thrown out the front lobby doors just like your former mistress."
