Chapter 3 - THE DECEPTION OF DEEDSVanessa clutched the lapels of her silk robe tighter, her knuckles turning white as rage and confusion warred in her chest. She descended the stairs furiously, stopping just two steps above Martha.

"Have you completely lost your mind, you ungrateful parasite?" Vanessa snarled, her face contorting with ugly fury. "You were fired yesterday! I ordered you off my property! I want you, and these two trespassing goons, off these grounds in five minutes, or I swear to God I will have you thrown in the county jail!"

One of the men in suits stepped forward, flipping open a leather-bound identification folder. "Agent Miller, State Probate and Asset Division. And this is Mr. Sterling, legal counsel for the primary estate holder." Miller didn't blink as he looked up at Vanessa. "You are in no position to issue orders, Miss Sinclair."

"Miss Sinclair?" Vanessa shrieked, whirling around to face the lawyer. "Are you deaf, you senile old fool? I am Vanessa Sinclair! This is my estate! My father left everything to me in his will five years ago when he died! Everything!"

Mr. Sterling smiled thinly, pulling a thick stack of legal papers from his briefcase. "Your father, Arthur Sinclair, left his entire estate to his primary blood heir, Vanessa. However, what you conveniently chose to forget—or perhaps were too arrogant and self-absorbed to ever investigate—is the true lineage of the Sinclair family trust, established in 1995."

Vanessa's blood ran cold. The color drained completely from her face, leaving her skin a sickly, chalky gray. "What... what are you talking about?"

"Arthur Sinclair had no legitimate children with his second wife—your mother," Mr. Sterling stated clearly, his voice carrying across the silent foyer. "You, Vanessa, were the child of a domestic employee brought in during an affair, later adopted legally for public optics, but kept completely out of the core corporate bylaws. The true, ironclad beneficiary of the Sinclair Trust—the sole entity holding the master voting shares, the real estate deeds, and the corporate bank accounts—is the legal wife of Arthur Sinclair. Registered under her maiden name, and later reinstated through formal marriage."

Sterling turned his gaze toward Martha, who stood with her hands clasped neatly in front of her.

"Meet Martha Sinclair," the lawyer announced. "The legal, wedded wife of Arthur Sinclair, and the primary legal owner of every square inch of this empire."
