Chapter 4 - The Masquerade of Blood"Then we fight together," I said, holding his gaze without flinching. "I didn't bring you back from the dead just to let you die alone in a ballroom."

Lorenzo stared at me for three long seconds. A slow, lethal smile spread across his face.

"You truly are extraordinary, Miss Bell," he murmured.

He walked to the weapons wall, grabbed a sleek, compact semi-automatic submachine gun, racked the bolt, and handed it to me. He then reached into a drawer and pulled out a stunning, deep-emerald silk dress that belonged to his late wife, along with a diamond-encrusted Venetian lace mask.

"Put these on," Lorenzo ordered. "If we're going to crash a party, we're going to do it in style."

Five minutes later, I stood in front of the full-length mirror. The plain, invisible maid was gone. The emerald dress fitted my body like a second skin, the dark lace mask concealing the upper half of my face, leaving only my intense eyes and dark red lips visible. Underneath the heavy silk skirt, the compact SMG was strapped securely to my thigh.

Lorenzo stood behind me in his flawless charcoal suit, a black silk tie neatly tied. In the mirror, we looked like the king and queen of an empire built on shadows.

"Are you ready, Clara?" he asked, his hands resting on my bare shoulders.

"Let's burn it down," I replied.

Downstairs in the Grand Ballroom, the scene was magnificent and grotesque.

Over two hundred elite syndicate members, crooked politicians, corrupt police chiefs, and Russian mob bosses were gathered around polished mahogany tables, drinking expensive champagne. On the main stage, a massive portrait of Lorenzo Moretti was draped in black silk.

Dante Voss stood at the podium, wearing a pristine white suit, raising a crystal glass of whiskey.

"Gentlemen," Dante announced into the microphone, his voice echoing under the crystal chandeliers. "Today, we mourn the loss of our great Don, Lorenzo Moretti. He was a father to us all. But as you know, business cannot stop. The FBI, led by an insider—a maid named Clara Bell—tried to destroy us from within. But I have taken control. Tonight, I assume command of the Chicago Syndicate!"

The crowd broke into polite applause, though tension was palpable among the older Capos.

"Wait!" a voice called out from the back of the ballroom. Capo Frank, a silver-haired veteran loyal to Lorenzo, stood up. "Where is the body, Dante? Why wasn't there a proper viewing? And where is Dr. Caldwell?"

Dante’s smile tightened. "Frank, the doctor is preserving the body. As for the maid, my men are hunting her down as we speak. She will be executed by midnight."

"You won't have to hunt far, Dante!"

A woman’s voice rang out from the grand balcony above the ballroom.

The entire crowd gasped, turning their heads upward.

I stood at the railing of the second-floor balcony, the emerald dress flowing around me, the Venetian mask glinting under the chandelier light.

"It's the maid!" a guard yelled, raising his pistol.

BANG!

A single gunshot echoed from the dark archway behind me. The guard dropped dead, a bullet hole precisely between his eyes.

Out of the shadows stepped Don Lorenzo Moretti.

The ballroom went dead silent. Champagne glasses dropped to the floor, shattering on the marble. Men stood up from their chairs, their faces turning ghost-white.

"L-Lorenzo?!" Capo Frank gasped, dropping to his knees. "My God... he's alive!"

Dante froze at the podium, his face twisting into a mask of pure terror and murderous rage. "It's an impostor! Kill them! Kill them both now!" Dante screamed to his hired Russian mercenaries.

"STAND DOWN!" Lorenzo’s voice boomed across the hall like a thunderclap.

The weight of his authority was so absolute that thirty guards who had raised their weapons hesitated, their hands trembling.

"Look at him!" Lorenzo roared, walking slowly down the grand marble staircase, his hand gently holding mine as we descended together. "Dante Voss wore my coat while my body was still warm. He paid Dr. Caldwell to poison me with a paralytic toxin so he could take my throne without a fight!"

"He's lying!" Dante screamed, pulling a gun from his vest. "He's a ghost!"

"If I am a ghost, Dante," Lorenzo sneered, stepping onto the main floor of the ballroom, "then I have come to drag you to hell."

Dante raised his gun aimed directly at Lorenzo’s head.

Before Dante could pull the trigger, I reached under my silk skirt, drew the compact submachine gun from my thigh holster, and opened fire!

RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT!

The entire ballroom erupted into chaos!
