Chapter 5 - The Blood Alliance"Protect the Don!" Capo Frank roared, drawing his weapon and firing at Dante's mercenaries.

The ballroom turned into a warzone. Loyalists who had served Lorenzo for decades turned their guns on Dante's faction. Bullets shattered crystal chandeliers, showering the crowd in sparkling glass and blood.
Lorenzo grabbed my arm, pulling me behind a heavy marble pillar as bullets chipped away at the stone.
"You shoot like a soldier, Clara!" Lorenzo shouted over the deafening roar of gunfire, a wicked grin on his lips.
"I learned by watching your guards miss targets at the firing range!" I yelled back, swapping the empty magazine of my gun for a fresh one.
"On my mark, we move to the stage," Lorenzo said, his eyes scanning the chaos. "Dante is trying to escape through the rear security door!"
"I'm right behind you!"
Lorenzo stepped out from behind the pillar, dual-wielding his Kimber 1911s. He moved with lethal, graceful precision—every shot finding its target. Two mercenaries stepped into his path; two shots sent them crashing into the buffet tables.
I covered his flank, firing controlled bursts at a mercenary who tried to flank us from the VIP lounge. The man crumpled, and I didn't feel a shred of remorse. The shy maid who cried over spilled milk was dead, replaced by the woman who had brought the king of Chicago back from the grave.
We surged onto the stage, but Dante was already gone, leaving a trail of blood leading into the rear executive hallway.
"Follow him!" Lorenzo commanded.
We sprinted down the private hallway, past rows of security monitors showing the chaos in the ballroom. The trail of blood led directly into Lorenzo's personal vault at the end of the hall.
Inside the vault, Dante was frantically stuffing stacks of bearer bonds and raw diamonds into a duffel bag, his arm bleeding heavily.
"Cornered, Dante," Lorenzo said softly, stepping into the vault with his gun pointed at Dante’s heart. I stood beside Lorenzo, my weapon raised and locked on Dante's forehead.
Dante stopped. He slowly turned around, his face pale, covered in sweat and blood. He looked at Lorenzo, then looked at me in my high-end dress and bloodstained mask.
"You..." Dante whispered, staring at me with terrifying hatred. "You ruined everything, you worthless little bitch. I spent three years planning this coup! I bought the doctors, I bought the Russians, I bought the police chief! And it was ruined by a maid who cleans my fucking toilet?!"
"She is ten times the man you will ever be, Dante," Lorenzo growled, his finger tightening on the trigger.
Dante suddenly let out a hysterical laugh. "Go ahead, Lorenzo! Shoot me! But you're already dead!"
Lorenzo froze. "What are you talking about?"
Dante pulled a small black detonator from his pocket. His thumb was hovering right over the red button.
"The paralytic toxin wasn't the main plan," Dante grinned maniacally. "I knew there was a chance you might survive or that Frank would start a civil war. So I planted twelve C4 charges beneath the foundation of this estate. The moment my heart stops—or the moment I press this button—the entire mansion collapses into rubble. Everyone dies. Me, you, your loyal Capos... and your pretty little maid."
My heart stopped.
"You're insane," I breathed. "You'd kill your own men?"
"I'd burn the whole city down before I let Lorenzo rule it again!" Dante screamed. "Drop your weapons! Drop them now, or I blow us all to kingdom come!"
Lorenzo slowly lowered his pistol, his expression unreadable. "Dante... put the detonator down."
"NO!" Dante shrieked. "On your knees! Both of you! Clara, drop the SMG or I press it right now!"
I looked at the detonator in Dante’s shaking, bloody thumb. His thumb was twitching. He was unstable, bleeding out, and ready to die taking us with him.
If I dropped the gun, he would force us onto our knees and execute us anyway before blowing the building.
I looked at Lorenzo. He caught my eye. In that fraction of a second, without a single word spoken, a complete understanding passed between us.
Trust me, his eyes said.
I opened my hands. The submachine gun fell toward the floor.
As the heavy weapon plummeted, Dante's eyes instinctively tracked the falling gun for a split second.
NOW!
Lorenzo didn't shoot Dante. Instead, he grabbed my waist and threw us both sideways behind the heavy steel vault door.
BANG!
A single shot rang out from behind Dante!
Dante’s eyes went wide. The detonator slipped from his fingers, bouncing harmlessly onto the carpet. He dropped to his knees, revealing a figure standing in the doorway behind him with a smoking gun.
It was Dr. Harrison Caldwell.
Caldwell’s hands were shaking violently as he held a small caliber pistol. "I... I couldn't let you blow up the house, Dante... my daughters are in the guest house..."
Dante collapsed forward, face down on the vault floor, dead.
Silence fell over the room.
Lorenzo stepped out from behind the vault door, picked up the detonator, and disarmed it with a swift entry of his master override code. He then looked at Caldwell.
"You saved our lives, Doctor," Lorenzo said coldly. "Does that erase the poison you put in my veins?"
Caldwell fell to his knees, sobbing hysterically. "Please, Don Lorenzo! I'll leave the country! I'll never return!"
Lorenzo looked at me. "Clara... what should we do with him?"
I stepped forward, looking down at the coward who had tried to murder the man I loved. Yes—in the midst of the blood, cold, and terror, I realized the truth. I loved Lorenzo Moretti.
"He stays," I said firmly. "He stays under house arrest. He works for us as a private physician. If you ever die under his care, Dr. Caldwell, my face will be the last thing you see before I personally put a bullet through your head."
Caldwell nodded frantically. "Yes! Yes! Thank you, Miss Clara!"
Lorenzo looked at me with an expression of pure awe. "A merciful queen," he murmured. "I like it."
Suddenly, the security screens inside the vault began to flash violently with bright red emergency lights.
A high-pitched siren began to blare throughout the estate.
I ran to the security console. On the camera feeds showing the outer gates of the estate, a fleet of twenty black armored SUVs was crashing through the heavy iron gates, firing heavy machine guns at Lorenzo's remaining guards.
"Lorenzo!" I screamed. "Look at the cameras!"
Lorenzo leaned over my shoulder, his face darkening instantly.
"The Russians..." Lorenzo spat, recognizing the crest painted on the armored doors. "Dante wasn't working for himself. He was working for Viktor Volkov—head of the Russian Bratva."
A dark, heavy voice suddenly boomed through the vault's private radio comms channel.
"Don Moretti," a voice with a thick Russian accent mocked over the speaker. "Dante was weak, but his payment cleared. My army is inside your perimeter. Hand over the girl, hand over the estate, and I will give you a quick death."
"Why do they want me?!" I asked, terror gripping my chest once more.
May you like
Lorenzo looked at the screen, his jaw clenching so hard the muscles jumped.
"They don't want you because you're a maid, Clara," Lorenzo said softly, looking into my eyes with a tragic truth. "Viktor Volkov knows who your father really was."
