Chapter 8 - The Final TwistSix months had passed.

Our life had transformed into an untouchable fortress of power and luxury. Lorenzo and I were married in a private ceremony on a cliffside estate in Amalfi, Italy. The Chicago Syndicate was cleaner, more profitable, and deadlier than ever under our joint leadership.
I was no longer the quiet maid in a cotton slip. I wore silk suits, commanded armies of guards, and managed a multi-billion-dollar legitimate enterprise that was reshaping the city.
It was a quiet Tuesday evening at our penthouse overlooking the Chicago skyline.
Lorenzo was sitting at his desk, reviewing shipping manifests, while I poured two glasses of aged scotch by the fireplace.
"You're quiet tonight, my love," Lorenzo remarked, looking up from his papers with a warm smile.
"Just thinking about how fast life changes," I replied, walking over and handing him a glass. "A year ago, I was sweeping the floors in the basement."
"And now you own the sky," Lorenzo murmured, taking a sip.
Suddenly, my encrypted satellite phone vibrated on the desk.
I picked it up. It was an anonymous text message from an untraceable military frequency.
There was no text. Only a single attached audio file.
I frowned, clicking play.
The audio began to play through the high-definition speakers of the study.
A man's voice filled the room. It was Dr. Harrison Caldwell's voice, recorded in secret months ago, before the attack.
"Dr. Caldwell," a smooth, refined female voice spoke on the recording. "Is the paralytic toxin ready?"
"Yes, ma'am," Caldwell's voice replied on the tape. "It will simulate complete cardiac arrest for up to eight hours. No machine will detect a heartbeat."
"Good," the female voice answered chillingly. "Inject Lorenzo during his surgery. Make sure Dante thinks he's taking over. Dante is an idiot; he will cause a war, and in the chaos, I will step in and claim the entire four billion dollars from my father's secret wallet."
I froze. The glass of scotch slipped from my hand, shattering on the hardwood floor.
Lorenzo slowly stood up from his desk, his face turning into a mask of complete horror as he listened to the voice on the recording.
The female voice on the tape was my voice.
"Are you sure his maid persona worked, Miss Bell?" Caldwell asked on the recording.
"Perfectly," my recorded voice chuckled softly. "Lorenzo thinks I'm an innocent, timid girl who fell for his heroic act in the pantry months ago. He will never suspect that I engineered the ambush on his motorcade. I will warm his body, 'rescue' him from Dante, gain his total trust, and become his wife. Once I have the Moretti empire and my father's four billion, I will eliminate Lorenzo for good."
The recording clicked off.
Total, suffocating silence filled the room.
I stood by the shattered glass, my heart pounding violently against my ribs. I turned slowly to face my husband.
Lorenzo was staring at me. The warmth, the adoration, the fierce love that had filled his eyes for six months was completely wiped away, replaced by a cold, murderous darkness deeper than the freezing room where we had met.
He slowly reached behind his back, drawing his Kimber 1911 pistol, and raised it until the black steel barrel was pointed directly between my eyes.
"Clara..." Lorenzo whispered, his voice shaking with a terrifying mixture of rage and heartbreak. "Tell me that wasn't you."
I looked at the gun pointed at my head.
I didn't cry. I didn't tremble.
Slowly, the sweet, gentle smile faded from my face. My posture shifted, stepping out of the innocent victim's shadow, my eyes turning as cold and sharp as surgical steel.
I reached up, unbuttoned the top button of my silk blouse, and took a slow, deliberate step toward the barrel of his gun until the cold metal pressed directly against the skin of my forehead.
"You always told me never to make myself smaller to protect a small man's pride, Lorenzo," I whispered, a dark, breathtaking smile curling my lips.
"The audio is real. The ambush was mine. But there’s one thing I didn't plan in that freezing room six months ago..."
Lorenzo's finger trembled on the trigger. "What?"
"I actually fell in love with you," I said softly, looking deep into his soul. "Now, pull the trigger, Don Moretti. Or kiss your Queen."
Lorenzo stared at me, the weapon locked on my head, as the screen went pitch black.
