Chapter 1 - "LOCK THE DOORS!" — THE PINK NOTICE THAT STOPPED A BILLIONAIRE’S HEARTThe heavy bronze doors of Graves Tower slammed shut with a thunderous thud that echoed through the vast marble lobby. Heavy steel security shutters rattled down over the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, plunging the opulent room into shadow before the emergency lights flickered to life, casting a stark, amber glow across the frozen crowd.

The receptionist stood paralyzed, her hand still hovering above her intercom. Executive Vice Presidents stopped mid-sentence, their leather briefcases dangling from their fingers.

Nathaniel Graves didn't care about any of them.

The billionaire fell to his knees directly in front of eight-year-old Ruby, ignoring the dust on her worn sneakers and the patches on her faded dress. His hands trembled as he reached out—not for the sleek leather wallet containing nine hundred dollars, but for the crumpled pink paper sticking out of her backpack.

With fingers that shook violently, he pulled the eviction notice free.

"Where did you get this paper?" Nathaniel demanded, his voice cracking with an emotion no one in this skyscraper had ever heard from him before. "Tell me the truth, child!"

"It... it came in the mail yesterday," Ruby whispered, tears welling in her eyes as two armed security guards closed in around them. "My mom crying all night because the landlord said we have to leave by tomorrow morning. Please, mister, I didn't steal your money! I brought it right back!"

Nathaniel barely heard her words. His eyes were glued to the bottom left corner of the pink notice, where the landlord’s official seal was stamped over a faded handwritten reference code: PROJECT CHIMERA – LOT 404.

Twelve years ago, that exact code was classified under a top-secret offshore trust—a trust that had belonged to his late wife, Eleanor Graves, who had mysteriously vanished in a fatal boat explosion off the coast. An explosion where no body was ever recovered.

Nathaniel flipped the pink paper over. On the back, written in faint blue ink that had survived years of damp storage, was a single symbol: a small, hand-drawn hourglass with a cross through the center.

It was Eleanor’s private signature.

Nathaniel’s breath hitched in his throat. He looked up into Ruby’s dark amber eyes—eyes that were the exact shape, color, and depth of the woman he had mourned for over a decade.

"Mr. Graves?" Chief Security Director Vance stepped forward, unholstering his sidearm. "We've locked the perimeter per your protocol. Is the child a threat? Should we hold her for questioning?"

Nathaniel stood up slowly, his towering six-foot-two frame casting a long shadow over Ruby. He folded the pink eviction notice with extreme care and placed it inside his inner jacket pocket.

"Director Vance," Nathaniel said, his voice dropping into a chilling, calm tone. "Call my personal driver. Prep the armored SUV. And tell the board of directors that the 2:00 PM merger meeting is canceled indefinitely."

"Canceled?!" Vance gasped. "Sir, that’s a four-billion-dollar deal with Sterling Global!"

Nathaniel turned, his ice-blue eyes piercing through Vance. "If anyone attempts to leave this lobby or place a phone call outside this building in the next ten minutes, shoot them."

He extended his hand down to Ruby.

"Come with me, little girl," Nathaniel said softly. "We are going to find out who your mother really is."
