Chapter 2 - THE SECRETS OF SUITE 808 — "YOUR MOTHER ISN'T WHO YOU THINK SHE IS"The private elevator shot up eighty floors in utter silence. Ruby clutched her backpack straps tightly against her chest, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

The doors chimed and opened directly into Nathaniel’s private penthouse suite. The room was massive, lined with mahogany bookcases, glass display cases filled with historic artifacts, and a massive floor-to-ceiling monitor wall displaying live stock feeds from around the world.

Nathaniel walked straight to a bar counter, poured a glass of ice water, and handed it to Ruby along with a plate of fresh pastries.

"Eat," he said gently. "You said you skipped lunch."

Ruby looked at the croissant, her stomach roaring, but she didn't touch it. "My mom told me never to take things from strangers."

A sad, bitter smile touched Nathaniel’s lips. "Your mother raised you well. What is her name, Ruby?"

"Clara," Ruby replied immediately. "Clara Vance."

Nathaniel paced over to his primary terminal and typed frantically into the encrypted system. "Clara Vance... Clara Vance... No record. No tax filings prior to seven years ago. No birth certificate matching that name in the state database. She's a ghost."

He pulled up a digital photograph on the high-definition monitor. It was a picture of a radiant woman with long chestnut hair, laughing in a garden, wearing a diamond pendant shaped like an hourglass.

"Ruby," Nathaniel said, turning the screen toward her. "Look at this picture. Have you ever seen this woman?"

Ruby leaned closer, her breath catching. Her fingers drifted up to touch the screen.

"That's Mom," Ruby said, her voice barely a whisper. "She looks younger, and her hair is different... but that's her! She has that same scar on her right wrist!"

Nathaniel staggered backward as if he had been struck by lightning. He leaned heavy against his desk, clutching his chest.

"Twelve years..." he muttered to himself, his face pale. "Twelve years I believed she burned at sea. Twelve years I believed my enemy destroyed my family..."

Suddenly, a loud red warning banner flashed across the primary monitor wall. An alarm chimed in a low, rhythmic cadence.

SYSTEM ALERT: UNAUTHORIZED DATA EXTRACTION DETECTED LOCATION: ALDRIDGE STREET SAFE HOUSE – IP ADDRESS MATCH

Nathaniel ran to the console. The remote monitoring feed connected to the property on Aldridge Street—the exact address listed on Ruby's eviction notice—showed four black SUVs pulling up to the curb of Ruby’s apartment building. Men in tactical gear, armed with silenced submachine guns, were spilling out into the alleyway.

"They found her," Nathaniel growled, hitting a panic button on his desk. "They monitored the eviction filing! They knew the moment the paper left the court system!"

Ruby screamed as she saw the live video feed of her apartment building on the screen. "Mom! Mom is in there!"

"Marcus!" Nathaniel roared into his comms earpiece. "Deploy Strike Team Alpha to 412 Aldridge Street! NOW!"
