Its annual charity gala was the most prestigious event of the year, drawing senators, philanthropists, and global leaders from all walks of life.
I stood on the balcony of the grand ballroom, adjusting my cufflinks as I looked down at the swirling crowd of dancers below. Lily, now a stunning and brilliant nineteen-year-old university student majoring in corporate law and child advocacy, was mingling effortlessly with the guests, her laughter ringing out clear and bright.
My phone buzzed quietly in my pocket. I pulled it out and glanced at the screen. It was a brief, automated notification from the federal prison system:
“Inmate Robert Sterling (ID #88492) has completed his transfer to the prison medical facility. Status: Critical.”
I locked the screen, slipping the phone back into my pocket without a single ripple of emotion on my face. The past was a grave already filled, its ghosts securely locked beneath six feet of reinforced concrete and forgotten history.
Behind me, the heavy oak doors opened, and Lily stepped out onto the balcony, a warm smile lighting up her face as she walked over and slipped her arm gracefully through mine.
"Uncle Arthur, everyone's waiting for your opening speech downstairs," she said, her eyes sparkling with pride. "Are you ready?"
