Chapter 5 - The Ultimate UltimatumRobert sank heavily onto the sagging metal chair just inside the motel doorway, burying his face in his trembling hands. The proud, untouchable patriarch of the Sterling family was completely dismantled, reduced to a weeping wreck in a twenty-dollar-a-night room.

"Please," Robert choked out, his shoulders shaking with genuine despair. "Have mercy. Leave us a little something... enough to start over. We'll leave the state. You'll never see us again."
I looked down at him with absolute indifference. "Mercy? Did you show Lily mercy when you forced her to sleep in the unheated basement while Ethan ate steak? Did Helen show mercy when she threw hot soup on her hands for dropping a spoon?"
Helen stopped screaming, her breath hitching as she stared at me with sheer terror. "Who... who are you?" she whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the motel’s ancient air conditioner. "Why do you care so much about an orphan nobody wanted?"
"Because," I said, stepping closer and locking my eyes onto hers, "Lily isn't just an orphan. She is my flesh and blood. She is my late sister’s only child—the niece you systematically starved, abused, and tortured while pretending to be her 'generous guardians' for the public eye."
The color drained entirely from Helen’s face. She staggered backward, her knees buckling until she hit the edge of the unmade twin bed. "Your... your sister? That's... that's impossible. Claire died in that car accident years ago..."
"Claire died because your husband cut the brake lines on her car to steal her share of the family inheritance," I dropped the bombshell with chilling, surgical precision.
The entire room went dead silent. The air seemed to turn to ice.
Robert’s head snapped up, his face turning the color of ash. His eyes bulged with absolute horror as he stared at me, his lips moving soundlessly. "How... how could you possibly know about that? That was buried twenty years ago! The police ruled it an accident!"
"The police were paid off by your father," I said, my voice dropping an octave, resonating with a terrifying, dark authority. "But digital forensics, untethered bank records, and a dying confession from your old family accountant tend to tell a different story. The federal indictments for first-degree murder and conspiracy are already signed by the Attorney General."
Sirens began to wail in the distance, growing louder with every second, echoing off the concrete walls of the motel parking lot.
Ethan spun around, looking wildly out the dirty window. A convoy of three black SUV's and two police cruisers pulled up directly in front of Room 14, their blue and red emergency lights flashing an ominous rhythm across the peeling wallpaper.

"No... no, no, no!" Ethan panicked, backing away toward the bathroom. "Dad, do something! Call someone!"
"There's no one left to call, Ethan," I said softly, stepping back outside and taking Lily’s small hand in mine. "Game over."
