Chapter 2 - The Audit of VengeanceThe slamming of the wrought-iron front gates behind us sounded like the closing of a prison door. The cold night air of the affluent hillside suburb hit our faces, carrying the faint scent of pine and impending rain. Lily walked beside me in a daze, her small hand clutched tightly in mine. She was still wearing the oversized,

"Are... are we really free?" Lily whispered, her voice cracking as a single tear traced a clean path through the soot on her cheek. "Will they... will they come after us?"
"Let them try," I said softly, opening the door of a sleek, matte-black Bentley that idling quietly at the curb. I gently ushered her into the passenger seat, making sure she was comfortable before sliding behind the steering wheel. "From this second forward, Lily, nobody in that house has the power to make you cry ever again. They are about to find out what it feels like to starve."
As the powerful engine purred to life, my phone buzzed on the dashboard. It was a encrypted message from Victor, my chief financial investigator stationed in downtown Manhattan.
“Primary targets secured, sir. All corporate accounts belonging to Robert Sterling have been frozen under federal injunction for tax evasion and securities fraud. The luxury cars, the mansions in the Hamptons, the art collection—it’s all under our receivership as of 8:00 PM tonight. Ethan’s personal credit cards have just been declined at the country club.”
A dark, satisfied smirk curved my lips. I tapped out a quick reply: “Good. Don’t let them sleep a wink. Phase two starts at dawn.”
Back at the mansion, the illusion of invincibility was already crumbling into dust. Through the dashboard tablet connected to the estate’s security feeds—which I still held administrative override over—I watched the chaos unfold in real-time.
Helen was sitting on the grand staircase, an ice pack pressed against her swollen cheek, weeping hysterically while a panicked doctor dabbed antiseptic on her cut. Robert was pacing the length of the marble foyer like a caged tiger, screaming into his smartphone as call after call to his high-powered lawyer friends went straight to voicemail.
"Dad! Dad, look at this!" Ethan shouted, stumbling down the stairs with his phone held out like a weapon. His face was ghostly pale. "My banking app... all my accounts are locked! It says 'Account Suspended Due to Ongoing Federal Investigation.' And look at the corporate stock ticker—Sterling Industries just took a freefall! We're... we're wiped out!"

Robert stopped pacing, his eyes bulging as the brutal reality slammed into him like a freight train. He grabbed the phone from Ethan’s hands, staring blankly at the red numbers flashing on the screen. The multi-million-dollar empire built on decades of ruthless corporate backstabbing, emotional abuse, and social posturing was evaporating into thin air in less than thirty minutes.
And the best part? They still had no idea who was holding the dagger at their throats. They thought they were just dealing with a random act of violence from a stranger who defended a neglected orphan. They had no idea that I had spent the last five years methodically buying up their corporate debt, piece by agonizing piece, waiting for this exact night.
