Chapter 3 - The Morning After the FallThe first rays of sunlight cut through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse suite overlooking the glittering skyline of the city. Lily was fast asleep in the master bedroom, wrapped in a plush silk duvet, looking peaceful for the first time in her young life. A team of personal stylists and private tutors I had hired were already waiting quietly in the hallway, ready to give her the world she had been denied.

I stood by the window, sipping a cup of black coffee, watching the digital clock flip to 6:00 AM.

Right on cue, my secure line rang. It was the gate security at the Sterling estate.

"Sir, we have a situation," the head guard’s voice came through, laced with a mixture of confusion and panic. "A fleet of federal marshals and asset-recovery trucks just arrived at the front gates. They're slapping seizure notices on the property. Mr. Sterling tried to physically block them and he’s... well, he’s currently being detained for obstruction of justice."

"Wonderful," I murmured, taking a slow sip of my coffee. "Make sure they pack light. They have thirty minutes to vacate the premises before the new demolition permits go into effect."

"Demolition permits, sir?" The guard blinked. "You're tearing down the mansion?"

"To the ground," I replied flatly. "I want to build a public shelter for abused children right on top of their ashes. It's poetic justice, don't you think?"

By 8:30 AM, the news had already broken on the financial news networks and local gossip columns. “FALL OF A TITAN: Sterling Industries Collapses Overnight Amid Massive Fraud Scandal; Sterling Family Estate Seized by Federal Authorities.”

The internet was eating it alive. Social media feeds were flooded with old photos of Helen showing off her designer handbags, juxtaposed with live helicopter footage of Robert being led out of his mansion in a crumpled suit, shielding his face from the flashing cameras. Ethan was nowhere to be seen—reportedly cowering in the panic room until the marshals threatened to cut the door open with a plasma torch.

I walked back into the living room, where Lily was just padding out of the bedroom, rubbing her eyes. She wore a brand-new, soft cashmere sweater and jeans that actually fit her properly. She looked at me hesitantly, biting her lower lip.

"Good morning, Lily," I smiled, setting my coffee cup down. "How did you sleep?"

"I... I slept like a rock," she whispered, looking around the expansive, sunlit penthouse with wide eyes. "Is... is this real? Are we really safe here?"

"It's entirely real, and nobody will ever hurt you again," I said, walking over and gently placing a hand on her shoulder. "In fact, today we have a very important appointment. We're going to court to finalize the permanent guardianship papers. And after that... we're going to pay a little visit to a very special family."

Lily’s breath hitched. "Visit them? Where?"

"At their new home," I smiled coldly. "A lovely, cramped little motel right off the interstate. I hear the walls are very thin."
