Chapter 18 - The Shadow of the Past

Two years passed like a single heartbeat.
The Duca name had transformed. The illegal shipments were gone, replaced by legitimate shipping logistics, real estate development, and charitable foundations managed quietly by Isabella. The underworld whispered of the legendary mafia boss who had walked through the fire and emerged with his queen by his side.
Emma was now five years old, attending a private academy in the city, her hand-washed cardigans replaced by neat school uniforms, though she still insisted on keeping a small silver locket—repaired and polished—safely tucked in her backpack.
One autumn afternoon, Lorenzo sat at his mahogany desk, reviewing financial reports, when a soft knock sounded at the door.
"Come in," he called out.
The door swung open, and Emma walked in, holding a small drawing in her hand. Her dark hair was tied back with a blue ribbon, and her eyes sparkled with that familiar, precocious cleverness.
"Sir," Emma said, holding up the piece of paper. "I drew a picture of the garden. See? Even the big black dog has a shiny collar now."
Lorenzo smiled, standing up from his desk and walking around to crouch down to her eye level. He looked at the crayon drawing—a sprawling green yard, a big black dog with a crooked golden ring around its neck, and two tall figures standing side by side beneath a bright yellow sun.

"It’s a masterpiece, Emma," Lorenzo said softly. "Where should we hang it?"
"Right beside the window," she pointed decisively. "So the sun can see it every day."
