Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Shadows

She looked like a specter summoned from a nightmare.

As Isabella stepped out from behind a stack of rotting crates, the light caught her face. The sharp, aristocratic cheekbones that had once graced society gala front pages were now hollowed out. Her skin was translucent, bruised purple beneath sunken eyes, and her hair—once a cascade of rich dark silk—was hacked roughly short with what looked like kitchen shears. She wore a man’s oversized wool coat, threadbare and stained, and shoes held together with twine.

Yet, as she locked eyes with him, the terrified girl he had buried six years ago flashed behind her gaze.

"You shouldn't have come," she whispered, her knees trembling so violently she had to catch herself against a wooden pillar. "If they find out you're here, they'll kill you. They'll kill us both."

"Who?" Lorenzo’s voice was a lethal hiss, dropping to the dangerous register he used before executing a traitor. He closed the distance between them in three strides, dropping to his knees regardless of the grime. He reached out, his calloused hands hovering millimeters from her face, terrified that if he touched her, she would turn to ash. "Isabella... who did this to you?"

She flinched away from his touch, crying out softly. "Don't look at me. Please. Look at what’s left of me."

"Who put you here?" he demanded, his chest heaving, the icy fury of a mafia king rising to engulf the room. "Tell me their names, and I will tear this city down to its bedrock."

"It wasn't a rival family, Lorenzo," she choked out, tears carving clean tracks through the soot on her cheeks. "It was yours."

The words hit him like a physical blow. Lorenzo froze, his hand still suspended in the air. "What are you talking about?"

"The night of the crash," Isabella shuddered, pulling the tattered coat tighter around her thin frame. "My car didn't fail. The brakes didn't just snap. Your uncle... Uncle Victor found out that I was keeping records of the syndicates' human trafficking rings. I was going to take our daughter—our real daughter—and go to the federal prosecutors."

Lorenzo’s breath hitched. "Victor... but Victor died of a heart attack three years ago."

"I killed him," Isabella said flatly, her eyes flashing with a sudden, feral fire. "Or rather, I poisoned his wine before he could finish me. But before he died, he whispered that if I ever tried to return to you, or if I ever exposed the family, he had men planted inside your inner circle. Men who would slaughter you the moment you showed weakness."

She looked down at Bruno, who was now leaning his heavy head against Lorenzo's knee, whining softly.

"So I stayed dead," Isabella whispered, sliding down the pillar until she sat on the cold concrete. "For six years, I lived in the dark, watching you from a distance, making sure you were safe, knowing that the second I stepped back into your world, I would sign your death warrant."

Lorenzo stared at her, the seismic weight of a six-year lie crushing down on his lungs. His uncle. The man he had mourned, the man whose portrait still hung in the east wing.

And then, a cold realization washed over him. If Victor had planted men inside the Duca family... who among his current inner circle was still taking orders from beyond the grave?
