Chapter 7 - The Wrath of the Duca Family

The heavy steel door of the wine cellar groaned as a heavy explosive charge was slapped against the outer latch.

"Back! Get behind the concrete pillars!" Lorenzo ordered, grabbing Isabella and pushing her and Marta into the deep inner alcove beside the wine presses.

BOOM.

The blast blew the outer reinforced wood to splinters, but the secondary steel frame held firm, though the shockwave rattled their teeth. Smoke poured into the cellar, mixed with the sharp scent of pulverized oak and cordite.

Through the ragged hole in the doorway, heavy combat boots stepped into the room. Three men, tactical vests gleaming under the emergency lights, rifles raised, sweeping the corners.

"Clear!" one shouted in Russian-accented English.

They didn't see the shadow detach itself from the wine racks above them.

Lorenzo dropped silently from the overhead catwalk, landing squarely on the shoulders of the lead operative, snapping his neck with a brutal, fluid twist before the man could draw a breath.

Chaos erupted in the underground vault.

The second operative whipped his rifle around, but Isabella stepped out from the alcove, her hands steady, and fired three rapid shots from the heavy revolver. The concussive blasts echoed like thunder in the confined space, dropping the gunman before he could clear his safety.

The third operative fired blindly into the darkness, clipping Lorenzo’s shoulder and sending a spray of blood across the vintage wine bottles, but Lorenzo didn't even flinch. He lunged forward, tackling the man to the concrete floor and driving his combat knife upward with relentless, mechanical precision.

Silence descended upon the cellar once more, broken only by the hiss of dying smoke and the ragged breathing of the survivors.

Lorenzo stood up slowly, blood soaking through the sleeve of his shirt. He looked back at Isabella. She was standing over the fallen gunman, the smoke curling around her tattered coat, holding the smoking revolver with the cold, unblinking focus of an executioner.

"Three down," Isabella said, her voice steady as a rock. "How many left in the house?"

"Three," Lorenzo replied, checking his magazine. "Including Kovalev."
