Chapter 18 - The Final Echo

The rain had finally cleared, leaving the Manhattan sky a crisp, brilliant shade of twilight blue.
Maeve stood alone on the private wrap-around balcony of the penthouse, the wind catching the edge of her jacket. She slipped the heavy gold pocket watch into her pocket alongside the single silver coin she had carried through every battle.
The door behind her opened softly, and Rocco stepped out onto the balcony, holding two crystal glasses filled with thirty-year-old scotch. He handed one to her without a word.
They stood side by side, looking out over the glittering expanse of the city they now owned not through fear, but through absolute, unyielding strategy.
"You know," Rocco murmured, taking a slow sip of his drink, "when you walked into The Gilded Vulture months ago handing out loose change to a crippled old man, I thought you were just a lost girl looking for charity."
Maeve smiled, her eyes reflecting the neon lights of the skyline like twin stars.
"And what do you think I am now, Uncle?" she asked softly.
