Chapter 7 - Dawn of the New Syndicate

The morning sun broke over the Manhattan skyline, casting a golden hue across the glass facade of The Gilded Vulture. Federal agents had cordoned off the docks three miles away, hauling away truckloads of evidence, encrypted servers, and mercenaries in handcuffs. Dominic Moretti was safely secured in a maximum-security federal holding facility, staring at a life sentence with no possibility of parole.
Inside the penthouse office, the atmosphere was entirely different.
The heavy mahogany desk was immaculate. Gone were the ledgers of blood money and illicit weapons trafficking. In their place lay corporate restructuring documents, global logistics contracts, and philanthropic foundation proposals.
Maeve sat at the desk, her tailored suit sharp and professional, her expression serene.
Rocco stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the city he had ruled for decades. He no longer looked like a crime boss. He looked like a titan of industry preparing for a corporate merger.
"The feds raided our secondary warehouses an hour ago, just like you planned," Rocco said without turning around. "They found enough paper trail to keep the justice department busy for a decade, and not a single shred of it points back to us."
"Because it all points directly to Dominic and the shell companies he created behind your back," Maeve replied, signing her name cleanly at the bottom of a legal document. "Legally speaking, you were incapacitated by your nephew’s financial abuse, and upon your recovery, you immediately cooperated with federal authorities to clean house."
Rocco turned slowly, a faint, appreciative smile touching his lips. "You really thought of everything, didn't you?"
"I had twenty years to plan, Mr. Moretti," Maeve said, looking up to meet his gaze directly. "And a very good teacher."
Rocco walked over to the desk, placing a heavy, ornate signet ring—the emblem of the Moretti syndicate, melted down and recast into the geometric seal of a legitimate global conglomerate—right in front of her.

"The board meets at noon," Rocco said quietly. "Are you ready to run the world, Maeve?"
Maeve picked up the heavy gold ring, slipping it onto her right index finger with a decisive click. "I've been ready since I was six years old."
