Chapter 4 - A New Partnership in Crimson

Maeve set her coffee cup down on a wooden crate. She reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a heavy, encrypted flash drive, placing it gently on the wood between them.

"Everything Dominic has built on your stolen foundation is on that drive," Maeve said. "Every bribe paid to city councilmen, every illicit weapons shipment routed through your cargo lines, every hidden account holding your stolen capital. With one click, the entire syndicate crashes into federal custody before sunrise."

Rocco looked at the flash drive, then back up at Maeve. A slow, dangerous smile crept across his weathered face.

"And if I click it?" Rocco asked.

"You go down with him," Maeve replied evenly. "Co-conspirator by association. The government has wanted the head of the Moretti family on a spike for thirty years. They won't care that your nephew was skimming off the top. They'll take you both."

"Unless..." Rocco prompted, his eyes gleaming with a predatory intelligence.

"Unless you hand the keys over to someone who knows how to clean house," Maeve said, stepping closer. "Someone who has the technical expertise to scrub the illegal operations, pivot the syndicate into legitimate global logistics, and leave the feds chasing ghosts."

Rocco let out a sharp, bark-like laugh that echoed off the corrugated metal walls of the warehouse. "You want to run the Moretti syndicate? You think you can manage wolves when you’ve spent your life hiding from them?"

"I didn't hide, Mr. Moretti. I trained," Maeve said, her voice cutting through the damp air like a scalpel. "I spent ten years getting degrees in international finance, forensic auditing, and corporate law specifically for this moment. I don't want to destroy your empire. I want to inherit it."

Rocco reached out, his thick fingers picking up the flash drive. He pocketed it slowly.

"First rule of the family business, Maeve," Rocco murmured, stepping close enough that she could smell the expensive scotch on his breath. "Trust is earned in blood, not spreadsheets."

Suddenly, the floodlights of three black SUVs slashed through the fog outside, blindingly bright. The screech of tires on gravel filled the air as armed men spilled out from the vehicles, surrounding the warehouse.

Dominic’s voice echoed through a bullhorn from the darkness outside: "Uncle! You should have stayed in your chair!"
