Chapter 2 - The Echoes of the PastDeep within the oak-paneled walls of the private study, the atmosphere was thick with hostility. The heavy velvet curtains were drawn shut, blocking out the fading afternoon light, leaving only the amber glow of a single desk lamp to illuminate the room.

Daniel poured two fingers of amber scotch into a crystal tumbler, swirling the liquid slowly before setting it down on the mahogany desk without drinking. He leaned back against the edge of the desk, crossing his arms over his chest.
"Talk," Daniel commanded.
Vanessa paced the length of the Persian rug, her black heels clicking sharply. She stopped near the bookshelf, tracing a manicured fingernail along the leather-bound spines of antique novels.
"You're actually believing a machine over me?" Vanessa finally turned, her voice dripping with theatrical disbelief. "A cheap housekeeper who came from nothing, who probably has debts we don't even know about? Daniel, look at me! Why would I frame her? What possible motivation could I have to plant my own heirloom necklace into a maid's bag?"
"That's exactly what I intend to find out," Daniel replied evenly, his voice utterly devoid of emotion. "Because when I reviewed the security logs from last month, I noticed something else. You didn't just plant that necklace today, Vanessa. You accessed the master safe three times in the past week—each time right after Emily's shift schedule was changed."
Vanessa's breath hitched for a fraction of a second—a micro-expression that didn't escape Daniel's sharp eyes.
"Coincidence," Vanessa snapped, her voice rising an octave. "I manage the household inventory. It's my job to check the valuables."
"The master safe contains family heirlooms that haven't been touched since my mother passed away," Daniel countered, pushing off the desk and walking slowly toward her. "You don't touch them, Vanessa. You never have. So why start now, right around the time Emily was assigned to clean the west wing?"
Vanessa opened her mouth to retort, but no words came out. The defiance in her eyes flickered, replaced by a sudden, frantic calculation. She realized that playing the victim wasn't going to work this time. Daniel wasn't blinded by her charm anymore; his analytical mind had locked onto the discrepancy like a bloodhound.
"You're obsessed with her," Vanessa hissed, dropping her defensive facade as bitterness took over. Her face twisted into an ugly snarl. "Ever since she stepped foot into this mausoleum, you've been watching her. Don't think I haven't noticed the way your eyes follow her down the hall. You care more about a servant girl than the woman who stands beside you in public!"
Daniel stared at her, utterly unimpressed by the outburst. "This isn't about jealousy, Vanessa. This is about trust. You committed a crime under my roof, and you tried to ruin an innocent person's life to cover your tracks. Now, I'm going to ask you one last time: Who helped you?"
Vanessa froze. The color drained from her face a second time, leaving her looking stark and pale under the amber light. "Helped... me?"
"You didn't orchestrate this alone," Daniel said quietly, stepping so close she could feel the heat radiating from him. "That necklace hasn't been in the safe for months. It was in the safety deposit box downtown. Someone retrieved it for you. Someone with access to the corporate keys."
Outside the study door, pressed flat against the polished wood in the dark hallway, Emily held her breath. She had sneaked back up from the staff quarters to retrieve her forgotten cleaning cloth, only to overhear the terrifying words echoing through the heavy door.

Corporate keys? Downtown safety deposit box?
Emily’s mind raced. This went far beyond petty household theft. This was corporate sabotage, or worse—a conspiracy tied directly to Daniel’s family empire. And she had accidentally stumbled right into the crossfire.
