Chapter 5 - Shadows on the PerimeterThe cool night air bit at Emily’s skin as she slipped out the back service exit of the mansion. The heavy burden of what she had learned in the archive pressed down on her chest like a physical weight. Her uncle Arthur hadn't been a criminal; he had been a scapegoat. A man sacrificed to protect the corporate empire that now funded the very estate she cleaned every day.

She walked quickly along the gravel path leading toward the staff quarters, her mind spinning with a million conflicting thoughts. Should she tell Daniel? Would he even believe her over his own fiancée? Or would he protect the family legacy, just like his father did twenty years ago?
Suddenly, the motion-sensor security lights along the garden path flickered and died.
Emily froze in her tracks. The sudden plunge into darkness was absolute. The towering hedges on either side of the path seemed to close in, casting long, menacing shadows under the pale moonlight.
"Hello?" Emily called out, her voice trembling slightly. "Is someone there?"
No answer. Only the rustle of autumn leaves being swept across the pavement by a sudden gust of wind.
She took a cautious step backward, her heart hammering against her ribs. That was when she heard it—the distinct, metallic click of a heavy gate latch unlatching near the western perimeter wall.
Before she could turn to run, a strong hand clamped firmly over her mouth, cutting off her scream. Another arm wrapped around her waist like a steel band, lifting her feet off the ground and dragging her backward into the thick shadows of the weeping willow trees.
"Quiet," a low, gravelly voice hissed in her ear. "Make a sound, and you won't live to see sunrise."
Emily thrashed wildly, kicking her legs and digging her fingernails into the thick canvas sleeve of her attacker's jacket. But the man was too strong. He maneuvered her effortlessly behind the massive stone pillar of the garden gazebo, pressing her flat against the cold concrete wall.
As her eyes adjusted to the dim light, she looked up into the scarred, weathered face of a man she had never seen before in her life. He wore a dark tactical vest over a black turtleneck, his expression completely devoid of mercy.
"Listen to me very carefully, Miss Vance," the man whispered, the use of her real surname sending a jolt of pure terror straight to her core. "You’ve been digging in places that don't belong to you. The archive files are none of your concern."
"Who... who are you?" Emily managed to choke out past his gloved hand.
"Just a messenger," the man replied coldly. He slowly loosened his grip over her mouth, keeping his other arm pinned firmly across her chest. "Your uncle tried to fight the Vaughan empire twenty years ago, and look where it got him—ruined, disgraced, and forgotten. If you know what's good for you, you'll pack your bags tonight, take whatever severance money Margaret gives you, and disappear before the sun comes up."
"I didn't do anything wrong!" Emily whispered fiercely, tears of frustration stinging her eyes. "They framed me! Vanessa planted that necklace to cover up her own crimes!"
The man let out a cold, cynical chuckle. "Nobody cares about a necklace, girl. But they do care about the multi-million-dollar embezzlement scandal buried in those archive servers. You think Daniel Vaughan cares about justice? He cares about his family's reputation. Cross him, and you'll end up just like your uncle."
Before Emily could reply, a bright beam of a flashlight cut through the darkness across the lawn.
"Hey! Who's over there by the gazebo?"
It was one of the estate security guards on night patrol.
In a fraction of a second, the scarred man released Emily, stepping backward into the thick wall of ivy lining the garden wall. With a silent, fluid motion, he hoisted himself over the brick barrier and vanished into the night just as the beam of the flashlight illuminated the empty gazebo.

"Emily?" The guard lowered his flashlight, jogging over in surprise as he spotted her trembling against the stone pillar. "What are you doing out here this late? You should be in the staff quarters."
Emily stared at the spot where the man had disappeared, her breath coming in ragged gasps. The warning was clear. She wasn't just dealing with a jealous, vindictive fiancée anymore. She was caught in a lethal corporate conspiracy that went all the way to the top—and staying at the mansion any longer wasn't just dangerous; it was a death sentence.
