Chapter 4 - The Midnight ConfessionThe grandfather clock in the grand hallway struck midnight, its deep, resonant chimes echoing through the empty corridors like the tolling of a funeral bell.

Upstairs in the west wing guest suite, Vanessa paced frantically in front of the ornate French doors leading to the balcony. Her phone buzzed violently against the glass tabletop. She snatched it up, her eyes scanning the encrypted message on the screen: The files are missing from the study archive. Did you secure them?
Her heart hammered against her ribs. She hadn't secured anything. Daniel had locked her out of the main study an hour ago, and her keycard had already been deactivated.
Suddenly, a soft knock echoed at her door.
Vanessa froze. "Who is it?" she called out, her voice sharp and defensive.
"It's me," came a low, gravelly voice from the hallway.
Vanessa’s eyes widened in recognition. She rushed to the door and flung it open, dragging the figure inside by the sleeve of their dark coat before slamming the door shut and locking the heavy deadbolt.
"You idiot!" Vanessa hissed, glaring at the tall, cloaked figure standing in the dim light of her bedroom foyer. "Daniel found the security footage! He knows I planted the necklace! Everything is falling apart!"
The figure slowly lowered the hood of their coat, revealing a face lined with exhaustion and cold calculation. It wasn't one of the junior staff members. It was Julian Cross, Daniel’s own chief financial officer and legal advisor—the man who controlled every single monetary transaction within the Vaughan estate.
"Calm down, Vanessa," Julian said smoothly, stepping past her and pouring himself a glass of water from the bedside pitcher. "The footage only proves you planted a piece of jewelry. It doesn't prove why. As long as we keep the focus on petty workplace drama, Daniel will never dig deeper into the corporate accounts."
"He's already asking about the safety deposit box!" Vanessa retorted, her voice shaking with panic. "He knows the necklace came from downtown. It's only a matter of time before he traces the retrieval signature back to your administrative credentials, Julian!"
Julian set the glass down slowly, his expression hardening into something dangerous. "Then we accelerate the timeline. We make sure Emily takes the fall for more than just a stolen necklace."
"What are you talking about?"
"I checked the restricted server logs before locking down the system," Julian said, a cold smile touching the corners of his lips. "Someone accessed the archive downstairs tonight. Someone was looking at the old 2006 acquisition files—specifically, the documents regarding Arthur Vance."
Vanessa gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "Emily?"
"Who else?" Julian stepped closer to her, his voice dropping to a chilling whisper. "She didn't just stumble into this house by accident, Vanessa. Her presence here is a calculated move. Her family wants revenge for what your father and my predecessors did to her uncle. If we don't act tonight, she's going to show those files to Daniel. And once Daniel finds out that his own company was built on stolen funds and framed evidence..."
"He'll destroy us both," Vanessa whispered, the horror fully dawning on her.
"Exactly," Julian nodded, pulling a small, sleek flash drive from his pocket and tossing it onto the bed. "So here is what we are going to do. We are going to make sure that by morning, Emily isn't just a thief. She's going to look like an industrial spy who stole confidential corporate documents right out of the master safe."

Unknown to them, parked in the shadows just outside the perimeter fence of the estate, a sleek black sedan sat idling. In the driver's seat, a man with a scarred face leaned over a laptop screen, watching the live thermal-imaging feed of Vanessa's bedroom window. He picked up his encrypted radio receiver and pressed the transmission button.
"Target is compromised," the man spoke into the mic, his voice gravelly and cold. "The girl knows about the archive. Move to phase two."
