Chapter 3 - The Secret in the SafeDown in the subterranean security archive, the hum of mainframe servers provided a rhythmic, hypnotic backdrop to the creeping shadows. The room was cool, lit only by the blinking green and blue LEDs of rack-mounted storage units.

Margaret slid her access card through the electronic reader with a practiced motion. The heavy steel door clicked open with a pneumatic hiss, revealing rows of high-resolution monitors displaying live feeds from every corner of the estate.

Standing beside her was Emily, her face still bearing the faint pink outline of Vanessa’s slap.

"You shouldn't be down here, child," Margaret said softly, her eyes scanning the scrolling data logs on the primary screen. "If Master Daniel finds out you're poking around the surveillance records, it could make things much worse for you."

"Margaret, I need to know why," Emily pleaded, clutching her apron tightly in her hands. "I've never done anything to Vanessa. I keep my head down, I do my work, I send every spare penny back home to my mother. Why would she target me specifically? There are a dozen other maids in this house!"

Margaret sighed deeply, pulling up a wooden stool for Emily before turning back to the keyboard. Her fingers flew across the mechanical keys, bringing up a hidden directory labeled Restricted_Archive_2025.

"It's not about who you are, Emily," Margaret said grimly. "It's about who your family used to be."

Emily’s breath caught in her throat. "What are you talking about? My family are working-class farmers from the northern province. We don't have any connection to people like the Vaughans."

"That's what your mother told you, no doubt," Margaret muttered, clicking on a scanned digital document dated nearly twenty years ago. It was an old newspaper clipping, yellowed at the edges, bearing a bold headline: Vaughan Industries Acquires Rival Firm Amid Embezzlement Scandal.

Emily leaned closer to the monitor, her eyes scanning the grainy black-and-white photograph accompanying the article. A younger Daniel Vaughan stood beside a smiling older man, shaking hands with a middle-aged executive whose face looked hauntingly familiar.

"That's..." Emily whispered, pointing a trembling finger at the executive standing next to her father's likeness in the photo.

"Your uncle, Arthur Vance," Margaret completed the sentence quietly. "Or rather, Arthur Vaughan. Your father’s older brother. The man who was blamed for draining the company’s pension funds right before the hostile takeover orchestrated by Daniel’s father."

The room seemed to spin around Emily. All her life, she had grown up believing her family had fallen into poverty due to bad harvests and misfortune. No one had ever mentioned an uncle in high finance. No one had ever mentioned the corporate war that had left her family disgraced and destitute.

"And Vanessa?" Emily whispered, the pieces of the puzzle violently colliding in her head. "What does she have to do with any of this?"

"Vanessa isn't just Daniel's fiancée," Margaret said, her voice dropping to a tense whisper as she checked the hallway surveillance feed to ensure they were alone. "Her maiden name is Sterling. Her father was the primary legal counsel for the board that prosecuted your uncle. And if public records show that a member of the Vance family was working inside this very house as a menial servant..."

"It would spark a massive media scandal," Emily finished, the icy reality finally sinking into her bones. "A revenge narrative. People would think I infiltrated the mansion to steal from them."

"Or worse," Margaret added grimly, turning off the monitor screen and plunging them into semi-darkness. "They would look into who really emptied those pension funds twenty years ago. And someone in this house is terrified that the truth is finally coming to light."
