Chapter 6 - The Trap is SprungBy 7:00 AM, the morning sun cast long, golden rays across the marble foyer of the Vaughan estate, but the atmosphere inside was as cold as ice.

Daniel sat at the head of the long dining table, his expression grim and unreadable. Before him sat a thick manila folder stamped with red confidential markings. Across from him, Vanessa sat sipping her black coffee with an air of practiced calm, though her eyes betrayed a nervous tension that she couldn't entirely mask.
Margaret stood quietly by the doorway, her hands folded in front of her apron, her eyes fixed anxiously on the entrance of the foyer as Emily walked in.
Emily looked different. She had changed out of her housekeeping uniform and into a simple dark blue blouse and trousers. Her face was pale, but her chin was held high. She didn't look like a cowering maid anymore; she looked like a woman ready for war.
"You wanted to see me, Mr. Vaughan?" Emily’s voice was steady, cutting cleanly through the morning silence.
Daniel looked up from the folder. His gaze lingered on her for a moment before he slid the manila folder across the polished wood table toward her.
"Margaret tells me you spent quite a bit of time in the security archive last night," Daniel said, his voice dangerously low. "Accessing files that require master clearance. Files pertaining to my father's corporate acquisitions from twenty years ago."
Emily didn't touch the folder. She kept her hands at her sides, locking eyes with Daniel without flinching. "I went down there because I was framed, Mr. Vaughan. Someone planted a necklace in my bag to destroy my reputation. When you live your whole life having to defend your name against people who think you're nothing, you learn how to look for the truth."
"The truth?" Vanessa scoffed softly, setting her coffee cup down with a sharp clink. "Emily, spare us the dramatic speech. The security footage showed you near the safe last week, and now our internal audit logs show that confidential acquisition records have been downloaded onto an external drive. You didn't just steal jewelry—you're committing corporate industrial espionage!"
Emily snapped her head toward Vanessa, a fierce fire burning in her eyes. "I didn't touch those files, Vanessa! You and Julian Cross are the ones trying to cover up what happened twenty years ago! You think I don't know who my uncle was? You think I don't know that my family was destroyed so your fathers could line their pockets with stolen pension funds?"
The dining room went dead silent. Even the junior footmen standing by the double doors stopped breathing.
Vanessa’s face lost every trace of color. She opened her mouth to speak, but no sound came out.
Daniel slowly stood up from his chair. He didn't look angry; his expression was a dark, terrifying storm. He walked around the table until he was standing just inches from Emily.
"How do you know about the pension funds?" Daniel asked, his voice barely a whisper. "Those records were sealed by federal court order two decades ago. Not even the board members have access to them."
"Because my uncle left records of his own," Emily said clearly, pulling a small, battered leather journal from her pocket and laying it gently on the edge of the table. "Before he died, he gave this to my mother. It contains every signed document, every bank transfer, and every name of the people who framed him to pull off the hostile takeover of Vaughan Industries."
Daniel stared down at the journal. His hand trembled slightly as he reached out and touched the worn leather cover.
Vanessa jumped to her feet, her chair scraping harshly against the floor. "Daniel, don't listen to her! It's a forgery! She's an operative planted by our corporate rivals to destroy everything we've built! Look at her background—she's a nobody trying to bring down a dynasty!"
"A nobody?" A cold, smooth voice echoed from the doorway of the foyer.
Everyone turned. Julian Cross stepped into the room, flanked by two private security guards in dark suits. Julian’s expression was icy, his hands tucked casually into his pockets.
"Vanessa is right, Daniel," Julian said smoothly, walking toward the center of the room. "The girl is a liability. We tried to handle this quietly with the necklace incident, but since she wants to play games with classified corporate documents, we have no choice." Julian nodded to the guards. "Secure her and confiscate that journal. We're handing her over to federal authorities for industrial espionage."
The two security guards stepped forward, reaching out to grab Emily's arms.
"Don't touch her!" Margaret shouted, stepping directly into their path.
"Step aside, Margaret, unless you want to lose your pension and your freedom," Julian warned, his eyes narrowing into cold slits.

Emily braced herself, her heart pounding against her ribs. She looked at Daniel, silently praying that he wouldn't fall for Julian's manipulation.
Daniel stood frozen between the two factions. For a terrifying second, it seemed like the Vaughan family legacy—built on decades of power and deception—would once again triumph over the truth.
