Chapter 10 - Where the Wildflowers Grow

Two years later.
The rolling hills of the northern countryside were painted in brilliant shades of amber, gold, and emerald green. A gentle autumn breeze swept across the meadows, carrying the sweet scent of damp earth and blooming wildflowers.
Nestled right on the edge of the valley stood a charming, rustic two-story farmhouse with a wraparound porch and a bright blue front door. It wasn't a cold, sterile mansion guarded by iron gates and hidden cameras. It was a home filled with the warm scent of cinnamon, old wooden floorboards that creaked with character, and the sound of genuine, uninhibited laughter.
On the front lawn, an eight-year-old girl with bright eyes and a radiant smile chased a golden retriever puppy across the grass. Her pink dress swirled in the wind, and clutched tightly under her arm, despite being missing an eye and having a crudely stitched ear, was Barnaby the teddy bear.
"Catch me if you can, Daddy!" Lily yelled back over her shoulder, her laughter ringing out like wind chimes.
Arthur stepped off the wraparound porch, holding a tray of freshly baked apple cider donuts and two mugs of hot cocoa. He wore a comfortable flannel shirt and jeans, looking every bit the relaxed, happy father he had always fought to be.
He set the tray down on a wooden picnic table under the shade of a massive oak tree and chased after his daughter, scooping her up into the air with a theatrical grunt. Lily shrieked with delight, wrapping her arms around his neck as he spun her around in circles.
"Gotcha! The fierce dragon has captured the princess!" Arthur laughed, kissing her forehead.
"You can't capture me, I have Barnaby the magical bear!" Lily giggled, holding the battered teddy bear up to Arthur's nose.
Arthur smiled tenderly, setting her down gently on the grass. He looked around at the open fields, the clear blue sky, and the peaceful horizon. There were no court summons, no hostile relatives, no midnight knocks on the door, and no shadows lurking in the corners.
Just peace. Real, hard-won, beautiful peace.
Arthur knelt beside his daughter on the grass as they sat down to eat their donuts together. Lily leaned her head against his shoulder, her small hand slipping comfortably into his calloused palm.
"Daddy?" Lily whispered softly, looking up at him with absolute adoration.
"Yes, my sweet girl?"
"Are we always going to live here? In our happy place?"

Arthur squeezed her hand tighter, looking out at the sun setting slowly over the quiet valley, painting the sky in breathtaking strokes of violet and gold.
"Always, Lily," Arthur promised softly, his heart swelling with a love that nothing in this world could ever touch. "Always."
