Chapter 7 - The Final Chess Move

By Friday morning, the police had processed the crime scene at Arthur’s apartment. The intruder’s DNA, blood trail, and dropped burner phone were handed over to Detective Miller, a veteran investigator who took one look at the burner phone's call log and turned pale.

The last outgoing call on the burner phone led directly to a secure, encrypted landline registered under Evelyn Vance’s private charitable foundation.

Armed with attempted home invasion charges, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, and wire fraud, Detective Miller didn't wait for a summons. He obtained an immediate arrest warrant signed by Judge Sterling himself.

At 2:00 PM on Friday, while Victoria and Evelyn were attending an elite charity gala at the grand downtown ballroom, federal marshals and local police marched through the glittering double doors of the event.

The orchestra stopped playing mid-song. The wealthy socialites gasped and murmured as four police officers walked straight toward the VIP table where Victoria and Evelyn were sipping champagne.

Detective Miller stepped forward, holding up the arrest warrant.

"Evelyn Vance. Victoria Hayes. You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit kidnapping, home invasion, wire fraud, and embezzlement," Detective Miller announced, his voice ringing loud and clear across the silent ballroom.

Evelyn dropped her crystal champagne glass, shattering it on the marble floor. Her face twisted into a mask of pure rage. "This is an outrage! Do you know who we are? My lawyers will have your badge by morning!"

"Your lawyers are currently being investigated by the federal prosecutor's office for obstruction of justice," Detective Miller replied coldly, gesturing to the officers. "Cuff them."

As the steel handcuffs clicked around Evelyn and Victoria's wrists, blinding camera flashes from paparazzi who had followed the police into the ballroom illuminated their disgraced faces. The mighty Vance empire had crumbled not from an outside attack, but from the rot within.

Arthur sat in his apartment living room, watching the live news broadcast on his laptop with Lily sitting comfortably on his lap, eating a bowl of cereal.

He didn't feel joy or triumph—only an overwhelming, profound sense of peace. The storm had finally passed.
