Chapter 2 - The Midnight Blueprint

By 11:00 PM, Lily was fast asleep in her own bed at Arthur’s modest, sunlit apartment across town. The apartment was a stark contrast to the sterile, designer-label prison of Victoria’s estate: it smelled of old books, vanilla candles, and real, lived-in warmth.

Arthur sat at his small wooden kitchen counter, the single overhead pendant light casting a sharp glow on his laptop screen. He finally opened the email attachment he had ignored in the driveway.

The subject line was chillingly simple: The Truth About the Trust Fund.

Inside was a scanned dossier compiled by a private investigator. As Arthur scrolled through the pages, his blood ran cold. Bank statements, encrypted text message transcripts, property deeds, and medical records laid bare a conspiracy that made the shouting match at the birthday party look like child's play.

Victoria hadn't just orchestrated a cold reception to punish Arthur for seeking joint custody. The entire birthday party was a trap—a staged public humiliation designed to paint Arthur as an unstable, volatile father in front of high-society witnesses, paving the way for Victoria to strip away his parental rights entirely.

Worse still, the documents revealed that the multi-million-dollar inheritance left by Lily’s late grandfather was not controlled by Victoria at all. It was tied to a strict moral clause: the primary custodian of Lily must maintain a stable, traditional household with zero public scandals. If Victoria engineered a successful custody battle proving Arthur unfit, the entire fortune—over fifteen million dollars—would shift exclusively into a secretive offshore account controlled solely by Victoria and her mother, Evelyn.

Arthur stared at a bank transfer record dated just three days ago. A payment of fifty thousand dollars had been wired from Victoria’s personal account to none other than Great-Aunt Beatrice—the very woman who had lunged at his face in the foyer.

They bought her performance, Arthur realized, his jaw clenching so hard his teeth ached. They paid her to start a fight, hoping I would snap.

If he had raised his voice back, if he had shoved past them or lost his temper, the security cameras strategically hidden in the foyer would have captured it. The footage would have gone straight to family court by Monday morning.

His phone buzzed on the counter. It was a direct video call from Victoria.

Arthur took a deep breath, straightened his posture, and hit accept.

Victoria’s face materialized on the screen. The maroon dress was gone, replaced by a silk bathrobe. She was sitting in her study, swirling a glass of red wine, her expression an icy mask of corporate detachment.

"You ruined everything, Arthur," Victoria said, her voice dripping with venom. "Do you have any idea how much embarrassment you caused tonight? The Van Hoozen board members were there."

"Save it, Victoria," Arthur interrupted, his tone eerily calm. The quiet confidence in his voice made her pause, the wineglass halting halfway to her lips. "I know about the fifty thousand to Beatrice. I know about the custody trap. And I know about the trust fund clause."

Victoria’s face went deathly pale. The immaculate facade cracked instantly. "What... what are you talking about?"

"I'm talking about checkmate," Arthur said softly, leaning into the camera light. "See you in court on Monday, Vic. But this time, I won't be asking for joint custody. I’ll be asking for full custody—and an independent forensic audit of every single asset your family owns."

He hung up before she could utter a single word.
